افتراضي Remembering Rex

The Little Theatre in St Andrew is set to come alive with the memory of dancer, choreographer , cultural figure and scholar the late Professor Rex Nettleford on Tuesday, as the Rex Nettleford Foundation stages its eighth annual fund-raiser, Remembering Rex.

The event has traditionally brought together two groups with which the late professor had a close relationship namely the National Dance Theatre Company (NDTC) which he co-founded in 1962, and the University Singers.

The NDTC’s artistic director, Marlon Simms, noted that this year for the first time a guest performer has been included in the programme. The Stella Maris Dance Ensemble has been invited to perform The Potter. A work choreographed by Dr MoniKa Lawrence and Patsy Ricketts in 2010, the year Nettleford died.

“Another major highlight of this year’s show will be the performance of an excerpt from The Crossing, which was choreographed by professor in 1978. However, the performance will be to live music from the University Singers and the NDTC Singers.”

“The idea came as well looked to inject something new into the performance. We just thought how would it look to tell the story as a collaboration. We brought both groups together and our first rehearsal was moving, inspiring and rich. It felt like all professor’s memories were in one place. Everybody was clearly moved. If the dancers were asked to go over the movements 20 times — they would, it was that special,” said Simms.

At this year’s event, founding member of the NDTC Barbara Requa will be honoured for her work in developing a post-independent Jamaican dance theatre and dance education. Requa is among five founding members of the NDTC who are still alive. The others are Bert Rose, Bridget Spauling, Gertrude Sherwood and Rosalie Markes.

The Rex Nettleford Foundation was established in 2010 to preserve the intellectual brilliance of Professor Nettleford. This is being achieved by way of supporting scholars and programmes that promote the strengthening of West Indian Society in the areas of social and cultural development through research, community service and intellectual excellence. The foundation has been working to identify students who exhibit the promise of the extraordinary talents of Nettleford. It will assist in their development so that they, in turn, can contribute to perpetuating his incomparable legacy in the world of dance, culture and academia.
