The Krispy Kreme Challenge Involves Eating 12 Donuts During A 5-Mile Run

The prospect of running five miles isn’t generally a positive one, so usually you need a bit of an incentive to get you through.


But while most of you might wait until you’ve finished to crack out a well-deserved sweet treat, there’s one race that lets you constantly graze on doughnuts the whole way.


In fact, it’s an essential part of the event – you’ve got 12 of them to get through.


The Krispy Kreme Challenge is a charity race that gives runners one hour to complete a five-mile course and eat a whole load of doughnuts.

“The mantra of the Krispy Kreme Challenge epitomises the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude.


“What started as a Challenge among ten friends has transformed into a nationally publicised charity race, and the number one tradition to complete before graduating from North Carolina State University.”


There are several categories to enter under, with the ‘Challenger’ category the one for those who wish to take on the run and consume all 12 doughnuts in under one hour.


There’s also a ‘Casual’ category for runners who wish to take a more leisurely approach and enjoy as many or as few doughnuts as they wish, as well as a ‘No Doughnut’ category for people who just want to run without chowing down on any doughnuts.


The most recent event – which was the 16th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge – took place on 1 February 2020, and saw 5,489 runners taking part.


The $175,000 raised was handed over to the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital, in turn bringing the cumulative donation from the yearly event to more than $1.8 million.


Organisers say on the website: “Since its inception, the Krispy Kreme Challenge has been proud to support the UNC Children’s Hospital, a specially-designed hospital that caters to the needs of sick or injured children and their families.


“The mission of the hospital is to provide the highest quality care to patients from all 100 counties in North Carolina, regardless of a family’s ability to afford the services.


“The money we raise goes to help fund additional equipment and support services necessary to provide exceptional care. It makes possible innovative programs that aid in the treatment and care of children suffering from a wide range of illnesses.


“It also gives patients the chance to just be kids, by playing on the 2-story play atrium or participating in a variety of on-site activities. In addition, the hospital has the state’s only fully accredited hospital school, which keeps patients from kindergarten to 12th grade on top of their studies.”
