If you’ve been thinking about picking up a Nintendo Switch but you haven’t quite gotten around to actually making the purchase, you may want to grab one sooner rather than later. Why? Well, it seems that the coronavirus, aka COVID-19, is impacting production in Nintendo’s Chinese factories, causing a bottleneck which could lead to a slowdown in the handheld console’s manufacture. The Switch is already sold out on the Japanese Nintendo Store page and Bloomberg News – who say they’ve been in contact with people familiar with Nintendo’s supply chain – states that the company is likely to “struggle to supply sufficient Switch consoles to its US and European markets as soon as April”. The next couple of months shouldn’t be affected because those shipments have already left Asia; but people eager to pick up one of the handheld consoles for themselves Might find them in short supply From April onwards. Many of the components of the Switch are produced in factories in China, where the Coronavirus originated and where it’s had the most impact. The limited supply is apparently having a knock-on effect at the assembly factory in Vietnam, which could result in far fewer of the consoles being shipped. “We do not see any major impact on the shipment to the US currently, but we will remain vigilant and take steps if necessary,” said a Nintendo spokesperson, via Bloomberg News. “It’s possible the supply would be affected by the virus if it becomes more widespread and prolonged.” The Witcher 3 on the Nintendo Switch / Credit: CD Projekt REDThe Nintendo Switch has enjoyed huge success since its launch in 2017 and has even exceeded the number of sales for the PlayStation 4 in Japan. No doubt this is largely due to the number of games that are now available on it, such as The Witcher 3, Overwatch, and Diablo 3, to name just a few. Definitely not the kind of games we’re used to playing on any of Nintendo’s handheld consoles of the past.In related news, there’s concern that the Coronavirus could also delay the manufacture of the eagerly awaited next-gen consoles, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, for similar reasons. China’s manufacturing sector is responsible for producing many of the world’s consumer electronics so any disruption to that area has the potential to cause widespread delays.
