افتراضي Wirral-born Paul O?Grady back on his pet project

</p> While most TV presenters take heed of the old adage not to work with children or animals, Paul Oâ??Grady takes every opportunity to appear alongside the cutest of companions.

The Birkenhead funnyman is back on our screens next month with a new series of For the Love of Dogs, and this time heâ??s taking rescue dogs to meet poorly children at St Georgeâ??s Hospital.

â??The kids loved it, they really loved it and they were delighted,â?* smiles Paul, 59. â??I felt like Mary Poppins that day when I sailed in, they all brightened up. They were all a bit shy at first, until you sit down and start yacking to them and then theyâ??re all full of life.â?*

For the 11-part series Paul is back at Battersea Dogsâ?? Home trying to find homes for as many abandoned pooches as he can. Series two averaged almost six million viewers per episode and the show has broken records for being the only television show to win five awards and be nominated for three in only two series â?? including The National Television Award for Most Popular Factual Entertainment Programme for two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014.

â??I think itâ??s because itâ??s a feel good show,â?* he explains. â??Itâ??s like Long Lost Family, you might start off with a terribly sad story but then it finishes with a happy ending. Iâ??ve learnt now from talking to the viewers and what they say to me, they like my relationship with the dogs and the animals. They like the fact that Iâ??m very hands on. I donâ??t sit there and say this is a poodle, Iâ??m lying on the floor with the poodle probably on top of me. But itâ??s a feel good thing, it makes you laugh, it makes you cry. Itâ??s that sort of thing we all like.â?*

Paul O’Grady’s For The Love of Dogs
When asked what he thought helped his show to beat the Great British Bake Off at the National Television Awards his answer was simple â?? â??Puppiesâ?*. This series he has some particularly cute canine companions.

â??My favourites were Lola the bulldog, she had an eye problem, I loved her,â?* he says.

â??Pepi the little old dog, he was a 12-year-old Shih Tzu and had lots of health problems, also Freddie the dog who was rehomed to Denmark. I took him to the boat so he could sail to Denmark.

â??He was such good company. He was gorgeous, he was huge, he was like a donkey. It made me realise Iâ??d love a big dog like that, who is so friendly, and so affectionate and trusting. Iâ??m dragging him round this boat and he was great. That woman in Denmark who rehomed him is a lucky woman, he was lovely old Freddie.

â??I love them all really when I think about it.â?*

Another dog which particularly captured Paulâ??s heart was a painfully thin Lurcher called Soldier.

â??Oh god love him, I mean it was heartbreaking his story,â?* recalls Paul. â??He was one that you go home and worry about, it doesnâ??t finish when you get in the car and go home. It made me angry, very angry, what people could do this?

â??Luckily they have great ability to recover and mentally recover as well and to forget about the past and trust humans again. Itâ??s sad really, you think theyâ??d keep away after that, you think theyâ??d learn and think, â??Iâ??m not going near those two-legged things againâ??. But they donâ??t and I think we have a responsibility really to care for animals, thatâ??s why we are here, not to abuse them.â?*

It seems no matter how many times he sees them, Paul never gets used to meeting the terribly neglected dogs.

â??No not all,â?* he admits. â??Actually this series I found it harder with some of them. And itâ??s the older ones whose owners have died, like Pepi, they kill me, they just kill me.

â??They have done nothing and donâ??t know whatâ??s happening. Itâ??s heartbreaking, really heartbreaking and thatâ??s what upsets me the most.â?*

Itâ??s not much of a surprise to say that Paul ends up adopting another dog this series.

â??She was a puppy, a few months old, called Tulip,â?* he says, wistfully. â??She was gorgeous, I mean really gorgeous. I fell for her hook, line and sinker as soon as I saw her. Tulip was such a good dog, she was good in the car, she was good with kids, she was good in the house but unfortunately it wasnâ??t plain sailingâ?¦â?*

On a brighter note, Paul decided to highlight the plight of animals in shelters by asking if he could take one dog, Krystal, to the set of Coronation Street, where she was offered a walk-on part in the show.

â??She was good as gold,â?* says Paul, proudly. â??In her scene Ken is preparing his car and caravan to go camping with Deirdre and heâ??s outside the Rovers fixing the engine. Krystal comes out of the Rovers with Ali, the dog handler, and walks over the road, it took one take, the dog was the star! I think it was my tutelage in the dressing room. Sheâ??s one of these breeds that people say â??oh noâ?? but sheâ??s a sweetheart she really is. You have to look below the surface really. Sheâ??s just brilliant but because of what she is people say no, theyâ??ve got such a bad reputation. She gave the Barlows a run for their money, she upstaged the lot of them. Thatâ??s my girl, sheâ??s a star!â?*
