New Planet of the Apes movie director addresses whether it?s a reboot or sequel

Director Wes Ball has rubbished reports that his and Disney’s new Planet of the Apes movie will reboot the franchise.

Recent reports had suggested that the Rise/Dawn/War trilogy â?? in which Andy Serkis garnered widespread acclaim for his motion-caption performances as Caesar, a genetically evolved chimpanzee â?? would be set to one side, with Ball kickstarting the story all over again.

However, the filmmaker has now taken to Twitter to confirm that the new chapter will actually be a continuation of the 2010s trilogy.

In response to a false report, Ball tweeted: “It’s never been easier for film journalists to actually get in touch with the actual people who actually know… but maybe it’s the point to NOT fact-check these days?

“Regardless. Don’t worry. I won’t ruin the surprises, but it’s safe to say Caesar’s legacy will continue…”

The director effectively made this clear when the new movie was first announced, as he admitted to wanting to ‘honour’ the Planet of the Apes movies that had come before it, which also includes the originals and Tim Burton’s 2001 addition.

“I’ll say this about Apes… I grew up on the original and absolutely love the previous trilogy,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I would only do this if I felt I could offer something special while still honouring what’s come before. We have something that’s shaping up to be an awesome chapter to this franchise.”

Following the film’s announcement, Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger also made it clear that the new film would be a continuation of Reeves’ trilogy.

Having concluded the saga with War for the Planet of the Apes, fellow director Matt Reeves is now working on The Batman, with Robert Pattinson starring as his Bruce Wayne.

The Planet of the Apes boxset â?? including Rise, Dawn and War â?? is available on Blu-ray and DVD now.
