افتراضي St Helens are showing their class at the Theatre Royal ? Pete Price

</p> There’s something magical happening in St Helens.

The Theatre Royal is becoming a must go destination for the people of Merseyside and thatâ??s all down to the Joseph Family, in particular Chantelle and Jane, with the help of Barry â?? Janeâ??s husband. The staff too are fantastic, giving it a homely feel.

It has been turned around â?? business has never been better; and itâ??s riding the crest of a wave.

You know when you have a successful Theatre when Bill Kenwright allows Blood Brothers to be staged, and was a sell-out.

What I love is the variety of entertainment on show.

I did panto there one year and loved every bit of it, as St Helens audiences are very warm. I went the other week to see Rita, Sue and Bob Too. What a cast and what a funny, but very rude, play which had the audience corpsing in their seats. A great cast with Ann Marie Davies playing a wife hard done by, and Iâ??m sure a lot of ladies will relate to that.

Olivia Sloyan who plays Sue and is a tremendous actress, Emily Fleeshman (the daughter of Sue Jenkins, who played Jackie Corkhill in Brookside) and Lee Latchford Evans from Steps, who still gets womenâ??s hearts racing. By the way, you see more of his bottom in this play than his face, to which a lot of the ladies screamed regularly. And letâ??s not forget my two dear mates â?? Crissy Rock and Micky Finn â?? who cheekily didnâ??t stick to the script! They had to throw in some topical gags. Both of them tore the play apart!

Micky played a very funny swearing drunk and Crissy took her teeth out and played herself with a different accent. It was a rip-roaring success and could be going on tour soon.

But I was watching two plays â?? one on stage and one unfolding right next to me with the Joseph family.

Let me explain. Jane and Chantelle donâ??t waste money when putting the production on. They will beg, steal and borrow props and clothing to keep the costs down. So Iâ??m sitting with Janeâ??s younger daughter Georgia, who has just joined Hollyoaks as a make-up artist after working on some really big productions, one being Last Tango in Halifax.

Barry who is extremely successful in the construction industry, was also watching the play. To my surprise, I heard Georgiaâ??s dulcet tones shouting at her mother: â??Thatâ??s my denim jacket that I lost and I was going to take it on holiday. And thereâ??s the belt Iâ??ve been looking for for weeks.â?* Next minute Barry pipes up: â??Jane isnâ??t that my favourite leather jacket and my jeans that Lee is wearing?â?* Jane was hysterical.

Chantelle, Georgiaâ??s sister quickly disappeared. Then Barry did a double take: â??That tea service Jane, was a wedding presentâ?* to which his wife pipped up â??needs must to save money to keep this Theatre goingâ?*.

All through the show objects and clothing were discussed, while I was trying to watch the play. The final blow at the end of this production, which got a standing ovation, was when Crissy Rock came out to say goodbye wearing her last costume from the play. She informed Jane she had left her change of clothes in the car. Janeâ??s face was a picture, she said â??that was my motherâ??s skirtâ?* to which Crissy replied â??goodbyeâ?*.

We went for a drink in the bar at the end of the show. Sue Jenkins was there with her whole family who are now all in the industry and who are known fondly as the Von Trapp Family.

It was great to see Richard Fleeshman and catch up with him after he took New York by storm starring in Ghost which also received amazing reviews in the West End.

Some girls from Liverpool asked for a photo with me, in fact they asked Sue to take it and then suddenly realised that standing before them was Jackie Corkhill â?? I was dropped like a hot potato!

If youâ??ve not been to the Theatre Royal, St Helens yet itâ??s definitely worth a trip and youâ??ll have a laugh!
