Coronation Street writer Jonathan Harvey thanks viewers for praise as fans say goodby

</p>Liverpool writer Jonathan Harvey has thanked Coronation Street viewers for their praise as fans said a tearful goodbye to Deirdre Barlow.

Twitter tributes poured in for the late Anne Kirkbride and her iconic Corrie character after Deirdreâ??s death storyline was aired last night.

Jonathan, who wrote the episode, said: â??Hopefully Iâ??ve done our Annie proud.â?*

He wrote on Twitter: â??Hard to write, but did it for this hilarious, bonkers, generous friend.â?*

The heartbreaking episode saw Deirdre’s husband Ken, played by real life friend Bill Roache, find out his beloved wife had suddenly died.

Close friend Bev Unwin returned to Weatherfield to break the devastating news to Ken, daughter Tracy and neighbour Audrey that she had passed away peacefully in the garden.

It fell to Deirdre’s best pal Liz McDonald, who was a close friend of Anne off set too, to pass on the sad news to the rest of the street’s fictional residents who had gathered in the Rovers Return for Deirdre’s 60th birthday party.

Beverley Callard, who plays Liz, thanked fans for their “wonderful messages” in response to the episode and tweeted: “Your messages did Annie proud. So much love to everyone”.

Anne was one of Coronation Street’s best-known performers and was loved by millions for her portrayal of Deirdre, famed for many years for her oversized glasses.

Liverpool actor Les Dennis, who plays Michael Rodwell in the ITV soap, retweeted a poignant picture of Ken holding Deirdre’s spectacles having just been informed of her death.

Anne, who played Deirdre for 42 years, died in January aged 60 after battling breast cancer.

A funeral service for the character will be shown during Monday night’s episode.
