افتراضي Portal 2 Almost Included A Hot Potato Deathmatch

Valve’s Portal 2 was arguably as close to a masterpiece as a game can get but it turns out we could’ve ended up with something completely different, according to a couple of developers, Tristan Halcomb and Graham Dianaty, who have got their hands on the unused code for the Source engine – with permission from Valve, we might add.

Ben Hanson and Kyle Hilliard of MinnMax discuss the forgotten code – known as F-Stop – in their latest video with Halcomb (thanks USGamer). It was Halcomb who reconstructed a brief look at a version of Portal 2‘s Deathmatch and it clearly seems to be some sort of game of hot Potato – but one where the potatoes are explosive and you need to use portals to pass them to other competitors.

Tristan Halcomb of Lunchhouse Software and co-developer Graham Dianaty have both been working on their own game using Valve’s Source engine for many years but after discovering some unused Portal 2 code, they approached Valve to ask permission to dig deeper and show the results off to the public.

Exposure is their new episodic documentary series and you can check out the first episode below, where they dig into the source code, explore the mechanics of Valve’s F-Stop, and show off their findings. This gameplay mechanic was Almost the basis for what eventually became Portal 2 and was initially mentioned by Geoff Keighley in The Final Hours of Portal 2 and later teased by Portal 2 writers, Erik Wolpaw and Chet Faliszek at GDC 2012.

“It was kind of a mix between the old Amiga game, Speedball, and Portal,” Wolpaw said. “Except with none of the good parts of either of those two things. It was super chaotic, difficult to tell what was going on, and no fun.”

So if you’re hoping to see an announcement that Portal Potatoes is on the horizon and set to be the next big release from Valve, I’m afraid you’re going to be disappointed. I guess we’ll just have to settle for Half-Life: Alyx instead.
