Avengers: Endgame sets an unwanted record with Oscars loss

Avengers: Endgame may have satisfied Marvel fans and toppled James Cameron’s Avatar off the top of the global box office, but Endgame didn’t quite knock it out of the park at this year’s Academy Awards.

Despite its impressive reach and commercial success, the epic Avengers conclusion was only nominated for one Oscar ahead of this year’s ceremony â?? one it didn’t end up winning.

Its loss in the Best Visual Effects category to 1917<em/> doesn’t leave Avengers: Endgame totally empty-handed, however, as its failure to nab an award now means it’s the first highest-grossing movie of all time not to win an Academy Award.

Former highest-grossers such as Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, Jurassic Park and Titanic all picked up at least something at the Oscars.

And while it’s not exactly a record we imagine the title wanted to set, it’s a new record nonetheless.

Endgame‘s impressive figures at the box office were cemented last month, just six months after officially becoming the highest-grossing movie ever made.

After updating those all-important numbers, the Russo Brothers’ title becamethe only movie ever to gross $2.8 billion at the global box office â?? although don’t expect it to retain that accolade.

After all, it was only in December that director James Cameron hinted that Avatar may be re-released. “Let’s give Endgame their moment and let’s celebrate that people are going to the movie theatre,” he said.

“I don’t want to sound snarky after I took the high road [by offering congratulations on social media], but they beat us by one quarter of a percent. I did the math in my head while driving in this morning. I think accountants call that a rounding error.”

Avengers: Endgame is out now on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K and digital download.
