Marvel has finally filled a major Thor plot hole with an alternate ending

We know, thinking about Thor: Dark World isn’t something many people want to do. The film was divisive amongst critics and fans, with many crediting Chris Hemsworth’s and Tom Hiddleston’s sheer charisma for lifting it out of the mire.

One thing many took particular issue with was not actually to do with the film, but rather with how its ending was addressed in the Dark World sequel, Thor: Ragnarok. In Ragnarok, Thor reveals that he and Jane broke up, despite the fact that at Dark World‘s end he literally walked away from the throne in part because of Jane.

Not to mention Jane herself became a damsel in distress, simply waiting hopefully for Thor to return after he sorted out his stuff with his dad. Nowhere to be seen was the headstrong, intelligent, driven woman that Natalie Portman had developed in Dark World.

The fact that he addressed the break up so casually (though clearly, he was going through something) was also confusing for fans who believed that Thor was more than just a douche who’d totally ghost Jane. Poor Jane, we lamented!

Now we have a glimpse into an alternate ending for Thor: Dark World thanks to Marvel’s special DVDs.<em/>

The alternate ending was posted to Reddit and seems to come from the Infinity Saga box set, which comes replete with special features, bonuses, and deleted scenes. The moment picks up from a familiar place, in the aftermath of Malekith being crushed by his own ship.

In the film, there’s a swift transition back to Asgard, with Thor telling Odin he doesn’t want to be king and Jane excusing Thor’s absence. The alternate ending, however, shows Thor waking up in an apartment, still on Earth, with his father at his bedside.

The two discuss what it means to be king, with Odin saying the same line as in the theatrical version, but this time instead of as a voice-over he says it straight to Thor: “You once told me that there would never be a wiser king than I. You were wrong.”

Recovered, Thor heads out to the patio where Jane is waiting, and the two have a fraught, but familiar, conversation about the future of their relationship. Jane says she can’t give up her life to go to Asgard and “be useless” and reminding him that he is going to be king, effectively breaking up with him.

Thor argues with her, reminding her that he doesn’t “burn to be king” to which Jane replies: “That’s why you’ll be a great one.” They talk about fate, saying perhaps they were only meant to be in each other’s lives for this moment.

Then Thor and Jane share a passionate, but bittersweet, kiss. He and Odin leave Earth, and return to Asgard where Thor takes up the throne. The final line of the alternate ending is: “Let us begin.”

Nope, no Loki-as-Odin reveal! Because, if you remember, Loki was always meant to die. If you ask us, the alternate ending fits way better than the one that played in cinemas.

It not only fills the ‘how did this break up even happen’ plot hole, but provides a much more cohesive character arc for Thor and Jane. And if the decision to have Loki impersonate Odin had to happen, that could have been a very tantalising ‘sometime later’ post-credit scene.

Instead, we were left with a wishy-washy non-ending and a humorous (if slightly unfulfilling) non-answer to the question of what really happened with the couple in Thor: Ragnarok.

Luckily we’ll be getting more of that ship with Thor: Love and Thunder, in which Natalie Portman returns as Jane Foster, aka (female) Thor!

Thor: Love and Thunder has a release date of November 5, 2021.
