PS5 Price Likely Dependent On One Important Factor, Sony Explains

2020 is the year that Sony and Microsoft step into the next generation of console gaming with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Both are expected to arrive around the “holiday” period, yet there’s still so much we don’t really know about either piece of hardware.


There’s been plenty of talks of specs on both sides. PlayStation has talked up its new controller, while Xbox has made a big deal about backwards compatibility. This is all great, but what I think we all really want to know – what will surely be a deciding factor for many – is how much these consoles are going to cost.


I don’t know about you, but I don’t have to money to buy both consoles right away. Hell, I barely have the money for one. I’d love to know if I need to start saving now, and which console is going to cost more. I’m certainly not saying Price is the only Factor, at least for me, but it’s undeniably a big one.


The new PlayStation logoThat’s why it’s getting a little frustrating that neither Sony nor Microsoft has told us anything about pricing yet. Yes, I’m thrilled that your consoles will have quicker loading screens and 8K support, but I’d also like to know how affordable these shiny new features will be. In a recent earnings call, Sony management touched on PS5 pricing, explaining that the reason we don’t yet is… well, because Sony is still working it out.


The reason we don’t have a Price for the PS5 yet is down to a variety of factors, CFO Hiroki Totoki explained via a translator. Among those factors, one crucial piece of the puzzle is the Price of the Xbox Series X. It seems Sony would like to know how much Microsoft plans to charge for its next-gen machine before setting out its own price. Understandable, I guess.


“What is not very clear or visible, is because we are competing in the space,” Totoki said. “So it is very difficult to discuss anything about the Price at this time. Depending upon the Price level, we may have to determine the promotion that we are going to deploy, and how much cost we are prepared to pay. So it is a question of balance.”


For comparison, the PS4 launched in the UK for آ£349, while the Xbox One would’ve set you back آ£429. I’d like to make it clear that I love both, but it’s no secret that the PS4 outsold the Xbox One this generation by quite some distance. As of last month, the PS4 was at around 106 million units sold worldwide, while the Xbox One is reportedly yet to crack 50 million.


The Xbox Series X / Credit: Microsoft This was Likely down to all kinds of factors, including the PS4 boasting a number of critically acclaimed exclusives, but I can’t imagine being آ£80 cheaper exactly hurt Sony’s chances in the early days of this generation. No doubt Sony will be looking to repeat that success with the PS5, but it all comes down to the Xbox Series X Price – and just how much cheaper Sony can realistically afford to make its own offering.


The PS5 homepage sprang to life recently, offering fans the chance to sign up for incoming news on pre-orders, games, and pricing. Hopefully this new arrival means we can assume that some kind of news is on the horizon soon.
