Oscars 2020 highlights: All the best moments from Janelle Monأ،e to Eminem

Watching the entire three-plus hours Academy Awards isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but that doesn’t mean you don’t want to know the moments everyone is talking about.

From memorable speeches to hilarious sketches, we’ve rounded up all the highlights and best moments from this year’s Oscars, whether you missed them happening live or just want to revisit them.

1. Natalie Portman

There were plenty of brilliant looks on the red carpet, but Natalie Portman made the biggest statement with her cape.

On it, she had the names of the female directors snubbed at this year’s Oscars, including Greta Gerwig and Lulu Wang.

2. Janelle Monأ،e opening the show

Without a host, it was left to Janelle Monأ،e to open the show with an excellent performance of ‘Come Alive’.

Her performance also featured a cover of ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbour?’, backed by dancers dressed as characters from Joker, Midsommar and more. Pose‘s Billy Porter also joined in the fun as if it couldn’t be any cooler.

3. Steve Martin and Chris Rock

Taking on the traditional monologue role was the winning combination of Steve Martin and Chris Rock, two former Oscars host who joked about their “incredible demotion”.

Their set took digs at the lack of female directors, a host and diverse nominees, among many other things.

4. Frozen 2 around the world

It might have been a shocking omission from the best Animated Feature, but Frozen 2 made its mark on the Oscars anyway with a unique performance of the nominated song ‘Into the Unknown’.

Idina Menzel was joined by actresses who voiced Elsa in other countries, including Willemijn Verkaik from Germany and Takako Matsu from Japan.

5. Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig

For the second year in a row, Oscar viewers were calling for Maya Rudolph to be the host of next year’s ceremony. This time around, she was joined by Kristen Wiig to present Production Design and Costume Design, but it was no ordinary introduction.

They took it as a chance to showcase their acting skills, and even had time for an impromptu musical number of costume-inspired songs.

6. Eminem

There was a major surprise outside of the winners with the unexpected appearance of Eminem performing the Oscar-winning ‘Lose Yourself’.

The range of reactions in the audience, including baffled Martin Scorsese, made the performance all the more entertaining. Despite winning in 2003, this was the first time Eminem has performed the song at the Oscars as he didn’t show up for that ceremony.

7. Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell

Giving Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wiig a run for their money, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell (who will soon be seen together in Downhill) presented Cinematography and Film Editing.

First, they joked about not understanding cinematography, before blaming editors as being the ones “who like to cut out a lot of my lines”, before Ferrell added: “I hate this award.”

Cynthia Erivo’s powerful nominated song ‘Stand Up’ is evident in its presence in the movie Harriet, but Erivo’s stunning live performance made it all the more resonant.

The song’s hopeful lyrics about “wanting to take my people with me” continue to speak to our socio-political context, but also the role of POC artists in awards shows like this year’s Oscars â?? where only one black actor or actress earned a nomination.

9. Cats

In a perfect blend of presenters and category, Cats stars James Corden and Rebel Wilson presented the award for Visual Effects.

Dressed as their characters from the movie, they had one of the best gags of the night: “As cast members of the motion picture Cats, nobody more than us understands the importance of good visual effects.”

10. Captain Marvel, Ellen Ripley and Wonder Woman

This year’s Oscars saw Eأ*mear Noone become the first-ever woman to conduct the Oscars. Introducing her before the Original Score category, the Oscars found a suitably epic trio to present with Brie Larson, Sigourney Weaver and Gal Gadot.

After joking about starting their own fight club, their introduction got serious and ended with them saying: “We want to stand here together and say that all women are superheroes.”

11. Bong Joon-ho

Everyone, us included, expected Sam Mendes to take home the Directing Oscar. Even Bong Joon-ho thought that after Parasite won International Feature Film, he could relax and yet, he took Director in the most welcome win of the night.

Whether prepared or not, he gave a classy speech that paid tribute to his fellow nominees, even starting a standing ovation for Martin Scorsese, before ending his speech with “thank you, I will drink until next morning”. What a guy.

12. Joaquin Phoenix

While not as focused as his BAFTAs winning speech, Joaquin Phoenix delivered another powerful and emotional speech after winning best Actor for Joker.

He addressed a wide range of “distressing” issues facing the world and noted that whether it’s about gender equality or racism, he sees a “commonality” in it being the “fight against injustice”.

Phoenix ended his speech with a quote from his late brother River: “Run to the rescue with love, and peace will follow.”

13. Parasite makes history

Better was still to come for Bong Joon-ho though as Parasite made history as the first movie not in the English language to win best Picture, capping an incredible night for the South Korean social thriller.

In both Directing and best Picture, Parasite beat the heavy favourite 1917 and for a ceremony that many thought was a foregone conclusion, it was an amazing end to the night.
