Birds of Prey sets an unwanted DC record with disappointing opening

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) has struggled to light up the box office over its opening weekend.

Boasting mostly positive reviews from the worldwide critics â?? we here at Digital Spy called it “chaotically fun” in our 4-star review â?? this blockbuster failed to transform that praise into financial gain.

Unfortunately, its domestic takings of $33.25 million means it now holds the record for the weakest opening of a Worlds of DC release.

The previous incumbent of this unwanted title was Shazam!, which opened to $53 million domestically, but those figures suddenly don’t look so bad now.

Birds of Prey opened with “a soft” $48 million internationally according to Variety, and it also cost considerably less than DC stablemates Aquaman ($160-200 million) and Wonder Woman ($120-150 million).<em/>

Most importantly, Margot Robbie’s new movie has a wide release ahead of it, so there’s still plenty of time to reel in the punters and secure some serious revenue.

And while we’re on the subject, did you know that Birds of Prey was preceded by a TV show of the same name back in 2002?
