LONDON: Prime Minister Theresa May was called on to hold an inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservatives by a Labour MP who attacked her party’s chairman for not being able to “utter the word Islamophobia”.Afzhal Khan (Manchester Gorton) said during Prime Minister’s Questions that in the wake of the terror attack in Christchurch “there is a global rise in Islamophobia, including in the ranks of the Tory party”. But in response May said they take all complaints “very seriously”, and claimed action is being taken against individuals.Khan was speaking ahead of a reception in Parliament on Wednesday to commemorate the 51 people killed in a mosque in New Zealand last month. He said that attack had led to attacks at mosques in Birmingham and Newcastle. And he then blasted Brandon Lewis, Conservative chairman, saying in a newspaper article on the issue this week he “could not even utter the word Islamophobia”, adding: “How can they deal with a problem they can’t even name?”The shadow immigration Minister and member of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims added: “I ask the Prime Minister for the third time, when will they conduct an inquiry and adopt the APPG definition of Islamophobia?”In response the Prime Minister said when any allegations are made about Conservative politicians or members “we look at those very seriously and actions are taken in relation to those individuals”. She said she “absolutely condemns” the attacks on mosques, saying Home Secretary Sajid Javid has “increased funding to protect places of worship”. And she added: “This has no place in our society and we should all be working to ensure that people can go to their place of worship and feel that they are safe and secure in this country.”
