افتراضي Having lodged FIR eight days after incident: 'People say justice is not done'

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday acquitted a man who was convicted by a trial court in 2012, awarding him death sentence for allegedly burning his spouse alive.A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief justice (CJ) Asif Saeed Khan Khosa heard an appeal filed by one Muhammad Imran against verdict of high court awarding him life imprisonment for allegedly burning his wife alive.A trial court had awarded death sentence to Muhammad Imran after a case was registered against him in Faisalabad in 2012. Later on, he challenged his conviction of death sentence before a high court which turned his death sentence into life imprisonment.Imran then filed an appeal before the Supreme Court which on Wednesday overturned his life imprisonment while giving him the benefit of doubt. The court ruled that the prosecution could not establish the case against the appellant Muhammad Imran hence acquitted him after setting aside the verdict of high courtThe court held that as per medical report of the woman, there was a gas cylinder blast and her injuries indicated the same. CJ observed that the medical report placed on record contradicts the findings of the prosecution. He noted that the First Investigation Report (FIR) was registered eight days after the incident, adding that the intentions of the accused’s in-laws changed later and they thought they could get some money from the case hence it means that the family was lying. The CJ said that people say justice is not being done Having reported an FIR eight days after the incident. The court after giving the benefit of doubt to Muhammad Imran, set aside the verdict of high court, acquitted him with the ruling that the prosecution has failed to establish a case against him.It is pertinent to mention here that since assuming the charge as Chief justice of Pakistan, justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa while adjudication upon criminal cases had declared that the court has started its journey towards the path of truth and had warned strict action against the witnesses giving false testimonies. The chief justice in one of the cases had ruled that if any portion of a testimony proved to be false then the whole of the testimony will be disregarded.Having lodged eight days after
