PICK OF THE WEEK ? The Blue Collar Wine Guy
The southern Rhone offers up a serious amount of good value reds that can go from light, almost Beaujolais in style, to more serious, meaty style reds. The most famous of all the AOP is Chateauneuf Du Pape. However, many of us do not have the coin to drink CDP on a regular basis. There are many other appellations in the southern Rhone worthy of our attention that produce some serious reds that are also age-worthy. The Rasteau AOP (Appellation d’Origine Protegee) was established in 2009, which is located 15 miles northeast of Chateauneauf Du Pape. My PICK of the WEEK is from a Domaine located in Gigondas that has vineyards in Rasteau, Sablet and Gigondas. Domaine Notre Dame des Pallieres is a family owned winery, run by two brothers, Jean-Pierre and Claude Roux. The winery is very old and the brothers stay true to old world style reds, which is evidenced in my PICK for this week.
 2016 Domaine Notre Dame des Pallieres Rasteau Cotes-Du-Rhone Villages (Southern Rhone, France)… $15.Aromas of violets, cherries, earth and roasted meats, with a hit of tar and tobacco. Solid structure and good balance on the palate, with notes of roasted meat, cherries and tobacco with an underbelly of violets, supported by structured, approachable tannins. Finishes with the meat element lingering with the tobacco. This is not for every palate, but if you want to dive into old world goodness, this is a classic red.
