Introducing Usonia, a New Post-Philo Dress Label Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright

In todayâ??s post-Phoebe Philo landscape, where fashion fans openly mourn the designerâ??s departure from Cأ©line, a slew of young talents are rising to the occasion, making a bid to fill the hole left in Philophilesâ?? hearts (and closets). One such contender is Carmen Rivera, 26, who honed her skills at The Row and Alexander Wang before teaming up with her motherâ??s college roommate Dalia Stiller, a Puerto Rican architect with a problem. â??I was going to stores and not finding anything that could take me from my board meeting or my museum get-together to my romantic dinner at night,â?* Stiller recalls, and she challenged Rivera to create the kind of understated but non-boring pieces that she lacked. â??That kind of versatilityâ??thatâ??s the woman of today. We cannot go back to our houses and change.â?* Within this white space for working woman essentials enters Usonia, which takes its name from Frank Lloyd Wrightâ??s pared-down homes. Perhaps surprisingly, Rivera chose not to focus on suiting. â??The clichأ© for a woman looking professional is a blazer or a pants set, which is totally cool, but there has to be another way to go about it,â?* she says. The RISD graduate eventually landed on a 22-piece lineupâ??made in the Garment District, a short walk from Usonia’s Chelsea headquartersâ??of investment dresses that fuse minimalism and material. Think: a softly knit-bodice with a pleated Egyptian Cotton skirt. Ecuadorian corozo-nut buttons line the back of a long-sleeved, floor-skimming number; whisper-light silk chiffon forms delicate, iridescent shells; white stitching accents a linen viscose strapless tube. Needless to say the designs are striking on their own, but in an effort to appeal to millennials as much as their mothers and grandmothers (as shown in the lookbook, which features models both baby-faced and silver-haired), each piece has been crafted to allow its wearer to create her own signature statement. â??The collection is so much about layering. . . you can use your imagination,â?* says Rivera, who often wears the short-sleeved poplin Dress backward so that the shoulders shift, or pairs the sheer peignoirs with vintage pants. To that end, dresses are only one part of the Usonia equation. While the existing frocks will be continually tweaked and refinedâ??after all, name anyone who doesnâ??t long for multiples of her hero piecesâ??individual capsule collections of shirting and then bottoms will follow.
