I posted a few days ago about box rest ideas and stopping D scratching the cut on his leg, thank you to everyone who replied with really helpful ideas! It now seems it is worse than first appeared, apologies for the likely incoherent rambling this is all still rather fresh and I'm a bit of a mess. Vet came back out today because something struck me as not right, despite presenting sound, regular cold hosing, and keeping a really close eye the swelling was still not decreasing, and we'd finished the course of antibiotics and antinflammatories. After walking and trotting up sound but going hopping lame after flexion test, the vet thinks there is a fairly high chance of a hairline fracture. It's now a case of waiting to see if the bone chunk that is likely there where he was kicked has seperated and is now dead tissue (in which case he'll need surgery). If it hasn't (which is best case scenario) he still needs 6 weeks box rest (although hopefully can do small paddock turnout in the day once the cut itself has scabbed over) at a minimum. Little jaunts round the yard to keep him moving are all allowed but nothing beyond that. X-rays are on the cards but because of where it is and the nature of it it's going to be incredibly difficult to see what's going on, so we're both agreed on treating conservatively and giving him every chance to heal as if it's the best case scenario rather than rush into surgery.Although the vet insisted the long-term prognosis is good and he'll likely return to full work, all I can keep hearing is "broken leg". Just feeling really sorry for him and for myself, nearly cried in front of the (very professional and lovely) vet and now at a total loss, he was going so beautifully and really making progress with his confidence and general strength. I know it could be a lot worse and I am genuinely grateful, but with moving counties and starting a new job as well it all feels a lot at the moment. Deep breaths, crappy TV and a cold cider (or several) needed methinks!
