Last year we brought our youngster in from the paddock & he began Head shaking really violently. We put him in the stable & he shook so violently that he hit his Head on one of the walls. This happened whilst the rape was blooming in the fields around us & there was also a load of tree pollen in the air. When we brought him in we did however notice that he was slightly lame on a front leg & he was sore around his shoulder.. We contacted a vet & took him along to see him. He x-rayed his head, scoped his nose etc & although couldn't see anything gave some medication & told us that he may be a seasonal Head shaker due to the pollen but we wouldn't know for 12 months, till the next year & see how he was. After this we brought him home & called in our back/physio person to check him out as he had shown some lameness at the same time. She examined him & found issues with his shoulder & withers. He's rather 'athletic' sometimes in the paddock. He launches himself in the air, twists & turns & she's aware of this. She came to the conclusion that he'd been 'energetic' in the paddock & probably had a fall possibly falling on his face thus bruising the nerves in his face causing neuralgia. Also injuring his leg, shoulder & withers at the same time. Anyway, a year on & he's fine. He has shown no signs of Head shaking this year & he's going well. A pretty pointless post really but for those who have a horse who's developed Head shaking this shows that it's not always permanent. Best of luck to those who have this issue.
