I'm trying out saddles for a horse I'm just starting to back. Best fit so far is a Thorowgood with a short S gullet bar in orange. Code label is missing so I can't ring Thorowgood to find out exactly what it is. Short bar means it is a cob fit, I think. It fitted nicely over her wither shape with good clearance and she was happy to wear it. However It was advertised as 17 ins but it is actually 17.5 and a little too long for my short-backed horse. So I bought a secondhand cob Thorowgood 17 ins labelled Cob MGX. This is also fitted with an orange gullet bar. It's the right length on her back but too low on her wither and appears to be a more open shape at the front. Are there two different t4 cob trees and pommel shapes out there? The 17.5 was an old version and the 17 is a new flatter version?? Would the smaller seat mean I need a different gullet bar? Any advice gratefully received as I'm very confused.
