I've been gifted a lovely New Forest (overgrown) pony. According to his owner, (an old family friend) the pony is too talented to be just a hack, and after hearing about my rubbish 18 months (lost my own wonderful mare, lost my job before getting a lovely new one! lost my dad and my dog :( ) has offered him to me. If it doesn't work out, he'll have the pony back to continue their hacking out and playing on the forest! So, I've got nothing to lose??I could have had him yesterday but I've put it off mainly due to a local hunt meet today. But, we don't really have the grazing, and this is causing a few discussions with the boss. its all a bit muddy and what we aren't grazing is for the spring. Apart from him joining a resident highland pony, which as stable manager I could try but normally a new comer would have his own patch until we get used to them and they are well behaved, and not ill. I'm convinced he is well looked after and therefore not wormy, been told he is very polite with others and has good manners. I'm sure the highland would be fine too. All ponies are well supplemented with good hay so some might argue that the grass shouldn't be an issue, it's the same all over at this time of year.I obviously could keep him stabled, but I really want to avoid that as he is an outside kinda guy! All others are outers too!Brings me on to my forthcoming issue... I'm due to have a big op on my leg, which will mean I'll be out of action for a few months. I want to argue the no grazing issue with the boss on this... I would like to get the pony, as for once I feel I'd like something to call mine, assess him (hope for the best) before I get the call for the op. That way, if he is to stay, then I can feel happy about leaving him to my colleagues while I'm repairing!! So, what would you do if you were me?
