I've had my suspicions for a while, but can now officially confirm that my Clever coblet has managed to wean baby horse all by herself, without any intervention needed from those pesky humans. Although she's never been one of those mares who tired of her foal, she's gradually limited how often she'll let Flower suckle over the last few months, and she's ended up doing all of the hard work for me. I started suspecting that she was beginning to wean her a few weeks ago, and had noticed her bag gradually reducing so I've been coming a close eye on things. As of today's check, it has been gone completely for a good while and she's no longer producing any milk at all. Pretty sure this is about the most stress-free weaning that anyone could hope for!Excitingly, this means I can start bringing Mary back into work earlier than I expected. I intend to gradually build up the amount of time they're happy to spend apart from tomorrow, and once we get up to half an hour or so, Mary can begin doing short bursts of work to get her back into the swing of things. Roll on a busy spring, and a summer filled with plenty of hacking!
