افتراضي Diplomatic front: Sharifs in Saudi Arabia to ease tension on Pak frontiers

LAHORE: The Sharifs ongoing visit to Saudi Arabia is aimed at finding a workable solution to easing tensions on Pakistan?s eastern and western frontiers in the wake of Trump?s national security policy, The News has learnt.

The ever-changing geo-strategic scenario, warranting instant political micromanagement, has necessitated the top decision makers to speed up the Diplomatic efforts for averting an impending disaster in South Asia. With Pakistan put on notice by the US via Afghanistan and the threats by India of some sort of surgical strikes in the mainland, the power hubs of the country simply could not wait for even a slight escalation of hostility. It could lead to warming of nuclear tips amidst huge conventional warfare imbalance in favour of Pakistan on both sides, it is feared.

With the military top brass already engaged in a dialogue on all sides of the divide, it is learnt, a Diplomatic move was imperative to lower the temperatures. Since Saudi Arabia has assumed enormous geopolitical significance after Trump is losing the Middle East fast to Vladimir Putin, Islamabad desperately needs to plead its case before Riyadh. Pakistan is stuck in the middle of nowhere vis-à-vis its strategic interests in Afghanistan, where it loses all to India if it stands down and faces an existential threat if it chooses to hold its ground.

As the ongoing war-mongering was making the situation even more unpredictable and the Diplomatic undertones were gradually evaporating, the decision makers rightly decided to take somewhat difficult detour. In such a situation, the military top-brass, it was learnt, looked towards Jati Umra against all odds. Amongst the polity, the Sharifs, having a history of contacts inside the royal palaces in Saudi Arabia, could have fetched the most of whatever the Royal family could offer to Pakistan in the current crises. With the younger Sharif already engaged on the issue, Nawaz was sent as a reinforcement after the National Security Adviser Nasser Khan Janjua?s elaborate meeting.

The Trump stand on Jerusalem left the Saudi royalty in a lurch for it could not relinquish the leadership of the Ummah at the cost of its animosity with Iran. It could not even swallow Turkey running away with that position. It is for this reason that Islamabad sought help from the Kingdom, perhaps, knowing well that Saudi Arabia, putting its territorial priorities aside, being the leader of the Ummah, just could not leave Pakistan high and dry in this crises.

The sole decision by Trump changed the obligations of the Kingdom, wherein Pakistan could benefit from. While Islamabad has always been a close ally, it has reserved its opinion over Riyadh?s Yemen offensive and the Iran narrative.

With the support for Saudi political and military engagements rather thinning in the region with overt and muffled voices of dissent being heard in Egypt, Lebanon, Turkey and other middle-eastern states, Pakistan could provide a much-needed fortification for the Kingdom and its position in the region and as the leader of Ummah, without directly becoming part in any of Riyadh?s political or military commitments.

The Sharifs have also been given the possible arbitration between as an agenda item. With people having their fingers crossed vis-à-vis what will the Sharifs get in return, in case they succeed in managing the situation, it will surface once the dust settles.

Sources in the party said, ?There is no doubt that the establishment has put great faith in the Sharifs for not only discussing Pakistan?s imbroglio, rather letting the Royal family know that Pakistan will play its role as a stabilising force in the region. Having good relations with Iran, Islamabad has the capacity and the will to diffuse tensions amongst the two Muslim giants. Let us see how far the Sharifs could be successful in reaping optimum results through their proximity with the royal family. What the future holds for the brothers and the party, if and when, they come out victorious, is not all that important at this juncture when the country is struggling to avoid a catastrophe.?
