LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif said Saturday all political parties should sit together on emergency basis to devise a sustainable plan for the future of Pakistan based on progressive and productive policies that would never be compromised for vested interests.
Speaking at a grand ceremony held at the Expo Center to celebrate Quaid-e-Azam Day, the chief minister said, ?One this birthday of the founder of Pakistan, we as a nation need to have a frank discussion regarding where we are at when it comes to Quaid?s vision of Pakistan that was built on national unity.? ?The divisions among ourselves are dragging us all back, while countries that came into existence after us have surpassed us in development and economic supremacy. We thought Bangladesh was a baggage on our shoulders but today it has exports greater than Pakistan,? stated Shehbaz. ?We got freedom from British but today we are still economically subjugated. We need to get rid of the client state image,? said the chief minister. ?We need to put our political agenda?s to aside, pause, and ask ourselves, have we really respected and honoured Muhammad Ali Jinnah by practicing his ideology?? he questioned. ?With privilege and authority comes added responsibility and accountability. Those chosen by Pakistan to represent and work are all responsible for the good and the bad in this country,? he said. The chief minister said that he had tried in a humble way to take Quaid?s vision of a progressive developed Pakistan forward by working in education, public health, infrastructure sectors as well as disaster prevention, management and relief. ?I'm not a pessimist. Defeat and despair are not known to Pakistanis and we need fight against all challenges united as the founder of the nation envisaged,? said Shahbaz. He said that Pakistan is not going to progress through speeches or poetry but through sincerity and commitment. ?We need to strategise our future and the best way forward is to utilise the large number of talented youth we have,? said Shahbaz, stressing the need for youth empowerment. The event was attended by foreign diplomats, parliamentarians, members of the judiciary, sportspersons and notables from all walks of life. It featured amazing performances by star singers like The Strings, Misha Shafi, Arif Lohar, Zoe Viccaji and Jimmy Khan, while colourful cultural performances were also presented.
