LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday issued notices on a petition, seeking action against the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) for suspending transmission of all private news channels during a police operation against the participants in the Islamabad sit-in. Justice Ayesha A Malik sought replies from the federal government and Pemra on the petition, filed by Amina Malik of Civil Society Network (CSN). Petitioner?s counsel Muhammad Azhar Siddique said that the Pemra chairman had ordered suspension of the transmissions. He asserted that the act was a sheer violation of Articles 19 and 19-A of the Constitution, which guarantee right to information. He submitted that Pemra could only stop the channels from covering an event unless it amounts to defamation, contempt of court or hate-speech. He requested for declaring the order of the media regulatory authority?s chairman as unlawful and ordering an action against him.
