LAHORE: Additional District and Sessions Judge Chaudhary Zulfiqar on Tuesday adjourned the hearing of a defamation suit moved by Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif against Imran Khan, giving the last opportunity to the Counsel of PTI chief to extend his arguments.
The chief minister had moved a defamation suit of Rs 10 billion against Imran over accusation of offering him (Imran) bribe to withdraw the Panama Papers case. On Tuesday, Babar Awan, Counsel of Imran, appeared before the court and sought time to extend his arguments on the matter. The court, after hearing Babar?s plea, adjourned the hearing but asked him to ensure his arguments on next hearing scheduled for December 19. During earlier hearings, the chief minister?s Counsel Mustafa Ramday had argued that Imran levelled false allegations of bribery against his client by stating through media that a common friend offered him Rs 10 billion on behalf of Shahbaz Sharif to remain silent on the Panama Papers case.
The Counsel said it was a serious allegation which badly damaged his client?s repute and had also caused serious mental agony and stress. The Counsel prayed the court to issue decree for recover of Rs 10 billion as compensation for publication of defamatory content in his favour.
Earlier, Shahbaz through a legal notice had urged Imran to name the person within 14 days who reached him on his behalf with the offer; otherwise, court would be moved against him. Later, the defamation suit was filed against the PTI chairman.
