Something smells fishy. Over the weekend tourists visiting Niagara Falls were greeted with quite an unsightly view of black, smelly water pouring into the Niagara River. Photos and videos were posted on social media showing a large pool of dark, sludge-like water near the Maid of the Mist docks. While the black water may have startled some visitors, Niagara Falls water Board executive director Rolfe Porter told WGRZ it's a routine procedure and "there shouldn't be any concerns about health." "The substance discharged is a result of the routine maintenance of one of the water board's wastewater sedimentation basins," the company said in a statement. "The 'inky water' is the result of a routine, necessary, and short term change in the waste water treatment process." "We apologize for causing alarm to residents, tourists and others," it continued. Porter told WGRZ the procedure happens in the spring and fall, and the water Board has a Department of Environmental Conservation permit which allows them to "discharge at various times." As for the foul odor, Porter said it "just comes with the territory." A DEC spokesman from Albany said the black water was investigated, and Niagara River is once again crystal clear.
