افتراضي ANP accepts SC verdict despite strong reservations: Asfandyar

PESHAWAR: An**uncing to accept the Supreme Court verdict on the Panama Papers case despite strong reservations, the Awami National Party (ANP) chief Asfandyar Wali Khan on Saturday asked the politicians **t to surrender parliament’s powers to other institutions.

“The country can’t afford confrontation. We had a principled stance on the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) report and its recommendations and did **t demand resignation from Nawaz Sharif. **w that the court has given its verdict, we accept it despite our reservations,” he told a news conference at the Bilour House after a meeting of his party’s think-tank.

The ANP senior vice-president Ghulam Ahmad Bilour, central general secretary Mian Iftikhar Hussain, provincial president Ameer Haider Hoti, Baz Muhammad Khan, Ilyas Bilour, Afrasiab Khattak, Zahid Khan and Bushra Gohar were also present on the occasion.

Though the ANP chief did **t explain his party’s reservations on the Supreme Court verdict, he said that Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution should be restored in original form. Asfandyar pointed out that the ANP had differences with the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) over **n-implementation of Fata reforms and neglecting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC). “But I urge all political parties and leaders to concentrate on real issues as the Panama Papers case has reached its logical conclusion,” he argued, adding, “We will **t become part of any move that could lead to derailing democracy or weakening Parliament.”

He said the ANP was **t part of the government and would side with the opposition parties in the Parliament. “But in case the opposition did **t show unity for the election of the leader of the House, then ANP would abstain from voting,” he added.

The ANP chief maintained that his party had tried its level best to restore Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution in its original form, but the PML-N became the main hurdle to it. He remarked that there is hardly a person in the present gathering who is fit and is Sadiq (truthful) and Amin (honest) under the amendments made in the Constitution during General Ziaul Haq’s rule.

Asfandyar Wali **ted that it was unfortunate that sweets were being distributed over the removal of an elected prime minister in Pakistan. “The mindset of the general people should be changed about democracy and democratic **rms,” he opined.

Though the Constitution did **t protect the civil rule in Turkey, the people resisted the military coup and restored the elected government, he pointed out.

The ANP chief said the media and political parties should **w divert their attention towards real issues as the whole country had suffered from Panama Papers issue for almost one year.

To a question, he said genuine political parties should **t pave the way for the ‘King Party’ and opportunist politicians. He said the ANP wanted the Parliament to complete its term so that the next general election is held as per schedule.
