Nawaz, Ghani meet in Astana; say close cooperation imperative to eliminate menace; PM, Russian president agree to take ties to new heights ASTANA: Pakistan and Afghanistan on Saturday recognised that terrorism is a common threat for both the countries as both agreed that close cooperation is imperative to eliminate the menace. Both the neighbourly countries agreed to use Quadrilateral Coordination Group (QCG) mechanism as well as bilateral channels to undertake specific actions against terror groups and to evolve, through mutual consultations, a mechanism to monitor and verify such actions. The matter was discussed in a meeting between Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana on Saturday, said a Foreign ****** statement. During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif joined President Ghani in condemning the recent terror attacks, especially the wave of violence in Kabul following a truck bomb in center of the city last week resulting in loss of life and injury to hundreds of people. The prime minister said that Pakistan remained committed to peace and stability in Afghanistan. "Pakistan's efforts for peace, stability and eco**mic progress of Afghanistan are a matter of its commitment to the brotherly people of Afghanistan, millions of who have been hosted in Pakistan for past 37 years," he remarked. He said that terrorism remained a common threat to both Pakistan and Afghanistan. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that Pakistan and its forces were valiantly fighting the menace of terrorism and the country had rendered immense human and eco**mic sacrifice in the struggle in the recent years. He viewed that close cooperation between Pakistan and Afghanistan was important for eliminating terrorism from the region. The two leaders agreed to use QCG to promote peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan. The prime minister stressed the importance of reconciliation and a politically negotiated settlement as the best solution to the Afghan conflict. In this context, he highlighted the serious efforts undertaken by Pakistan for facilitating an Afghan-owned and Afghan-led process. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif held a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin wherein both the leaders reaffirmed their desire to take the bilateral relations to the next level by enhancing cooperation in multiple spheres. During the meeting that took place here on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, the two leaders took a comprehensive review of bilateral relations. They agreed that there was a healthy growth in the relations between two sides and that the high-level interactions and cordial political relations had set the stage for translating political goodwill into a substantive eco**mic partnership. They viewed that current state of relations between Pakistan and Russia was characterised by mutual trust, commonality of interest, better understanding and convergence of views on important issues like regional security, combating terrorism, drug trafficking and greater eco**mic cooperation. Both the sides were also working closely to further expand cooperation in educational and cultural fields. They agreed to work on concrete proposals for the next session of Pakistan-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Eco**mic, Scientific, and Technical Cooperation which will take place in Moscow in December this year. It was also **ted that the Joint Working Group on Energy was an appropriate mechanism to reinforce existing cooperation in energy sector. The strong interest of Russian companies and enterprises in the energy sector of Pakistan was also highlighted. Russia is already engaged in installation of LPG Air Mix Plants in Pakistan and establishment of a 600MW combined cycle power plant at Jamshoro. Both the leaders agreed to fast-track the implementation of **rth-South Gas Pipeline, the agreement for which was signed in October 2015 between two sides. The two sides also reviewed defence relations during recent years. The first-ever Pakistan-Russia Joint Military Exercise 'Friendship 2016' was seen as a manifestation of growing defence and counter- terrorism cooperation which could contribute towards promoting peace and stability in South and Central Asian regions. The two sides also benefited from the joint counter-narcotics naval exercise 'Arabian Monsoon' in the Arabian Sea in October 2014 and December 2015 respectively. Discussions on regional issues focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan relations with India. Prime Minister Sharif reiterated that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan was important for Pakistan's own, progress and stability. He said Pakistan welcomed any peace initiative that could lead to peace and stability in Afghanistan. He also highlighted the fact that the simultaneous admission of Pakistan and India into SCO would improve prospects of better relations between the two countries. Later, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif arrived Pakistan after concluding his two-day official visit to Astana, Kazakhstan.
