افتراضي Asif, Sartaj to brief Senate on Saudi military alliance

ISLAMABAD: After the outrage expressed by the Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani and PPP Senator Farhatullah Babar in the Senate on Tuesday, the government has asked Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz to brief the House on the Saudi military alliance on Wednesday (today).

Rabbani informed the Senate that the adviser would brief the House, on Wednesday, about the Saudi military alliance. “I had called both minister for defence (Khawaja Asif) and the adviser tomorrow, and that breach of privilege **tices be issued to the secretaries’ defence and foreign affairs, but I’ve just been informed that the adviser (Sartaj) himself will brief the House,” he said.

Earlier, before the House resumed the budget debate, Babar rose to move his calling attention **tice to draw attention of the adviser towards the statements of Saudi authorities that the Islamic military alliance would **t restrict to only terrorist organisations like ISIS and Al-Qaeda but would also take action against the rebel groups posing threat to any member country on the request of that country. Rabbani told him that he was **t entitled to that information.

The chair called for deferring the calling attention **tice till Wednesday (today) when the minister of defence and the adviser would be present in the House.

Babar requested that he be allowed to put three questions to the government as to why it was **t sharing information on the matter. However, the chair again retorted by saying, “Why **t we should pack Parliament up instead, as the requisite information is **t being shared why the legislature is being treated like a ping-pong ball”.

Rabbani explained that the **tice was received on April 25 and the matter was communicated to the Ministry of Defence on May 2 and again it was alerted to the **tice, as it was listed on the agenda on May 29 for the sitting on May 30 in the morning at 11:00am.

However, at 10:35am the Senate Secretariat was told that it was **t concerning the ministry that was why it was referred to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Then again, the secretariat was informed that this ministry had sent it back to the Ministry of Defence.

“Parliament has ** right to have access to sensitive information. Then what is Parliament for? I shall **t tolerate it the way the Parliament is being treated,” he asserted. He wondered was it impossible for information about Saudi Arabia to reach Parliament. He asked if Parliament was for cutting grass. Senator Babar remarked, “We have persistently tried to get some information about the matter. Why the government is concealing information; it should come clean on this matter.
