Ramazan begins in parts of KP today
 Mufti Popalzai-led private committee claims moon sighted by over 30 personsPESHAWAR: Ramazan will begin in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) today as Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai of the historic Masjid Qasim Ali Khan an**unced here on Friday night that he had allegedly received sufficient evidence about the sighting of the Ramazan moon. This meant the moon-sighting this year despite the federal government's efforts to ensure that Ramazan should start on the same day throughout the country. On Friday it became obvious that the government had failed to achieve this objective. The marathon meeting at the Qasim Ali Khan Mosque, sited in the congested old Peshawar, continued for over an hour even after the central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Mufti Munibur Rahman's an**uncement at around 10:00pm that ** credible witness was received from anywhere in the country about the Ramazan moon-sighting. The long-serving Mufti Munibur Rahman declared that the first of Ramazan would be observed on Sunday. However, the witnesses kept approaching the Masjid Qasim Ali Khan and the other privately operating moon-sighting committees in different districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Charsadda, the Ramazan moon-sighting had been an**unced even before the an**uncement by the Qasim Ali Khan Mosque head Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai. Finally at 11:00pm, Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai spoke to the media and an**unced that the moon had been sighted and that the first of Ramazan will be on Saturday. He said that his moon-sighting committee received 30 credible witnesses from across the province. The witnesses were mostly from Peshawar city and district. They belonged to localities like Kohati, Palosai and Hayatabad in the city and Musazai in rural Peshawar. Some women too claimed to have sighted the moon. In Charsadda, nine men and three women had claimed to have sighted the moon. Some 12 witnesses had reached the mosque in person while others had approached Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai-led committee by telephone. Two members of the official Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committee including Dr Habibur Rahman and Qari Abu Bakr Chishti also attended the meeting at the Masjid Qasim Ali Khan. The faithful kept waiting for the an**uncement of Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai and his committee. Though they knew that the official Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee had already given its verdict that Ramazan moon hadn’t been sighted, it increasingly became clear as darkness fell that Masjid Qasim Ali Khan after getting evidence would eventually an**unce the start of the month of fasting. The clerics and the people in almost all districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa except those in Malakand and Hazara divisions and in Fata **rmally follow Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai’s an**uncements. The faithful continued making phone calls to media houses and to the Masjid Qasim Ali Khan. Soon after the declaration by Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai, an**uncements were made on loudspeakers from mosques in Peshawar and in other districts in the province informing the people that Ramazan would begin on Saturday. The PTI-led provincial government in the province didn’t endorse or make any an**uncement regarding the Ramazan moon-sighting. However, the official Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal committee held its own meeting in Peshawar and received evidence from 12 people that they had sighted the Ramazan moon. By that time though, the Mufti Munibur Rahman-headed Central Ruet-e-Hilal committee had already ended its meeting after declaring that the Ramazan moon had **t been sighted.
