The apex court while hearing a case acquitted four death row prisoners for lack of evidences. A three-member SC bench, headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa and comprising Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Qazi Faez Isa, heard the case. An anti-terrorism court (ATC) had awarded death sentence to Aslam and his three accomplices for allegedly murdering Muhammad Naeem on the court premises in Quetta. There were convicted under Anti-Terrorist Act. The court after hearing arguments from both sides acquitted all the four accused giving them the benefit of doubt. In a**ther case, the Supreme Court acquitted a murder suspect convicted 13 years ago. Malik Iqbal was awarded capital punishment by a Rahim Yar Khan sessions judge in a murder case in 2004, which was later converted into life imprisonment by the Lahore High Court (LHC). He had been implicated for allegedly murdering Abdul Khaliq in Fateh Pur. Hearing the suspect's appeal against the LHC order, a three-judge bench of the apex court ordered his acquittal, giving him benefit of doubt on murder charges. "The accused are languishing in jails but ** one is taking action against fake witnesses," Justice Asif Saeed Khosa observed. He remarked that real witnesses were **t ready to record their statements and the court would **t accept statements of fake witnesses. He remarked that real accused get acquitted by courts due to fake witnesses.
