افتراضي India, BD sign defence pact

India, sign defence pact MUMBAI: India offered a $4.5 billion line of credit to neighbouring Bangladesh on Saturday to help it implement projects in priority areas such as the energy sector, and a separate $500 million credit line to support defence related procurements.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the an**uncements after a meeting with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is on a state visit to India.

"We want to build cooperation in new areas, especially some high-tech**logy areas, that have a deeper connect with the youth in both our societies," Modi said in a speech.

"These would include working in the fields of electronics, information tech**logy, cyber security, space exploration, civil nuclear energy, and other areas," he said.

The two sides also agreed on close cooperation between their armed forces, according to the speech released by the Indian government.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is on a four-day visit to India.

"India has always stood for the prosperity of Bangladesh and its people. We are a long-standing and trusted development partner of Bangladesh," Modi said at a press briefing after the sides signed as many as 22 agreements in key sectors including civil nuclear energy.

"In this context, I am happy to an**unce a new concessional line of credit of $4.5 billion for the implementation of projects in priority sectors for Bangladesh.

"We have the greatest admiration for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's firm resolve in dealing with terrorism. Her government's 'zero-tolerance' policy towards terrorism is an inspiration for all of us," said Narendra Modi. "This brings our resource allocation for Bangladesh to more than $8 billion over the past six years."

There was ** breakthrough, however, in a long-standing dispute about the sharing of water from the Teesta River which flows through both nations although Modi vowed to find a solution to the issue seen as vital for Bangladesh farmers.

Hasina said the two countries will jointly produce a documentary on the “1971 War of Liberation of Bangladesh”, a move that is likely to irk Pakistan.

Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who separated Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971.

"We are committed to expanding our relationship with India," said Hasina.

"The entire South Asia region will be a beneficiary of our friendly relations and cooperation."

The two countries resolved to step up anti-terror cooperation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi terming spread of radicalism a “grave threat”, **t only to the two countries but to the entire region. After talks with his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, Modi also an**unced a US$500 million Line of Credit to support Bangladesh’s military procurement.

As a result of the visit, Bangladesh-India rail link has been restored after 50 years. A new passenger train service from Khulna to Kolkata through Petrapole in India and Benapole in Bangladesh. A rail link between Radhikapur and Birol for running goods trains. -- Agencies

Muhammad Saleh Zaafir adds: Harping on its same old tune, Indian prime minister, while hitting out at Pakistan, said that “it breeds, inspires and encourages terrorism” and this “thought” is a roadblock to peace within the region and the world.

Ig**ring Indian Army’s cruel and coercive role in the Indian-held Kashmir (IHK), Narendra Modi spoke in New Delhi in the presence of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. He emphasised that “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” (Everyone’s participation, everyone’s prosperity) is **t just restricted to India, but also to the neighbouring countries and development of India is incomplete without the progress of the region.

“We have extended a hand of friendship towards every country (of the region) and have invited them to be part of our growth. Without being selfish, we have wished good for the entire region,” he claimed.

“The thought, whose policymakers prefer terrorism over humanity, destruction over development, destruction over creation, backstabbing over trust, is the biggest challenge to society and its eco**mic development,” he said.

“The Indian Army never shied away from its duty and set an example by following conventions of the war. Over 90,000 prisoners of war were released safely after the 1971 war. The humane gesture shown by India is one of the biggest events in the century,” Modi boasted.

The Indian PM alleged that the ge**cide in 1971 was undertaken to wipe out an entire generation of Bangladesh and every person who was proud of the idea of Bangladesh was eliminated. “The purpose of this ge**cide was **t just killing the in**cents, but to uproot the idea of Bangladesh,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Hasina said the history of Bangladesh has been written with the blood of Indians killed along with “valiant freedom fighters of Bangladesh”.

“They fought together for the independence of Bangladesh. The story of their sacrifice will be remembered from generation to generation in our two countries,” she said.
