Conference on natural resources sustainable utilisation



PESHAWAR: Speakers at the second international conference on sustainable utilisation of natural resources Monday stressed the need for adopting modern techniques for mineral extraction to avert waste of the **n-renewable capital.

The one-day moot was jointly organised by the National Centre of Excellence in Geology (NCEG), University of Peshawar, and University of Swabi.More than 100 scientists, engineers and planners from across the country and abroad attended the conference.

The moot was aimed at discussing the ways and means to tap the oil and minerals resources, dimension stone and infrastructure, sustainable agriculture and effective strategies for climate change adaptation.

Provincial Minister for Labour and minerals Anisa Zeb Tahirkheli was the chief guest. UoP Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Rasul Jan was the guest of ho**ur. University of Swabi Vice-Chancellor Dr **or Jehan, Fata University Vice-Chancellor Dr Tahir Shah and National Centre of Excellence in Geology Director Dr Irshad also attended the conference.

The speakers said the poor extracting techniques in mineral exploration had **t only depleted them, but also led to serious health hazards for manpower working there. The participants said there were some 300 billion tonnes of mineral reserves in the country.

They said that due to poor extracting techniques more than 80 percent reserves were wasted. They said Pakistan had the sixth largest mineral resources in the world and the country would be forerunner in exporting minerals finished goods.

Anisa Zeb spoke about the government strategy towards sustainable utilisation of resources and said a comprehensive mineral development and regulation ordinance had been enacted. She said the government was receptive to research-based improvement in its policy that may lead to maximising end usable products through minerals extraction. Dr Rasul Jan said that skilled human resource was needed to reduce the loss of natural resources and policy circles should train the mine workers.
