PESHAWAR: The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter, on Monday staged a sit-in outside the ****** of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) to protest the blocking of tens of thousands of computerised national identity cards (CNICs) of locals.
Led by JI provincial head Mushtaq Ahmad Khan and district head Sabir Hussain Awan, the party workers supported by the general public protested outside the Nadra ****** on the GT Road in Gulbahar.
The Nadra authorities have blocked thousands of CNICs of locals of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, suspecting them to be Afghans. These commoners have been suffering for months as their cases have been sent for verification to one or the other department.
“Tens of thousands of people of the province and Fata have been suffering for months. Since their CNICs are blocked, they can’t apply for jobs, receive degrees or travel abroad. The verification process must be smooth and quick and everybody should **t be bothered,” said Mushtaq Ahmad.
The JI leaders criticised Nadra, saying it has become a money minting machine. They added that the cards of thousands of people are blocked mostly to make way for corruption. The speakers accused Nadra of ruining the future of a large number of people while the process is causing mental stress to thousands of others. The JI leaders asked the federal government and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to resolve the issue or the angry public would go out of control.
“It can lead to a law and order issue if Nadra did **t stop blocking the cards of the people of Fata and KP. The government should take **tice of corruption and incompetence of Nadra and other government departments,” said one speaker.
