Why did Musharraf choose timing for his assertions when army faces challenge to counter Indian threats?
ISLAMABAD: When General (retd) Pervez Musharaf pleads for a system of check and balance, it sounds hilarious. Look who’s talking. The man who ruined every single institution during his tenure, never cared a fig about law, rules and the Constitution, which he instead had abrogated twice, and became the sole reason for all time low popularity of the institution of Pakistan Army, today talks about systems. After 9/11, he seriously compromised Pakistan’s sovereignty without consulting anyone, offered the country’s airbases to America, allowed drone attacks even within the territory of Pakistan, permitted the CIA and FBI to establish their intelligence network in Pakistan, handed over Pakistanis including Dr Afia Siddiqi to Washington for dollars, fully supported the US-led attack on Afghanistan but today he says, “The United States had used his country at its convenience and ditched it.” Some retired generals of Musharraf’s time have already said it on record that the dictator did **t even bother to consult the military’s top commanders and even ig**red the GHQ while taking such critical decisions relating to national security. A Chief of General Staff (CGS) of Musharraf’s tenure had once told the media even he was informed by Musharraf only after having committed to Washington that some Pakistani airbases would be given to the US forces. Being a dictator, he played with the Constitution, law and rules, and was answerable to **ne. Anyone who dared to disagree with him whether in the military or in civil, was shown the door. He abrogated the Constitution twice, ******* the Chief Justice of Pakistan arbitrarily and unlawfully, arrested dozens of judges of the superior judiciary to bar them from attending their ******s and yet he has the guts to talk about constitutional system of check and balance which he had never followed. Musharraf set up the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to check corruption but used it to harass and victimise the opposition voices, and to coerce politicians to join his King’s party; he did **t allow bureaucracy to work independently; police and FIA remained politicised during his tenure; he never had the time to even Look into the recommendations of civil service reforms committee that he himself had constituted and today he blames democratic governments for mis-governance. Purely for his personal political gains, Musharraf introduced the NRO, gave a clean chit to hundreds of those facing corruption cases and thousands of those booked under serious criminal charges but **w he talks about “inherent weakness” of Pakistani democracy. The same dictator empowered Altaf Hussain and his MQM beyond anyone’s imagination and turned a blind eye to the killings, kidnappings and extortions by Muttahida in Karachi only for the sake of his own politics. He shamelessly waved his fists in the air on the same evening when almost 50 persons were killed in the streets of Karachi on May 12, 2007 but remained unaccountable. The man who was responsible for denting Pakistan Army’s repute, which has been redeemed during the tenures of General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and the incumbent Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, is **w again eager to drag the military in civil affairs. Ironically, Musharraf has chosen the timing for this when Pakistan Army is faced with the serious challenge of countering India’s covert and overt threats against Pakistan. While the situation demands Pakistan military’s focused attention to what the enemy is doing on the borders and inside Pakistan through its proxies, Musharraf had the cheeks to say that democracy in the country has **t been tailored in accordance with the dictates of the environment. Why Musharraf and his friends when in power did **t give any sample of democracy that they are projecting **w? They have forgotten that democracy is weak in Pakistan because it was **t allowed to function through direct or indirect interventions. Today where democracy is in vogue, people are enjoying its fruits. We have been given hotchpotch democracy so we are forced to eat its rotten fruits. Musharraf said, therefore, the military is forced and pulled, sucked into the political environment, especially when mis-governance is going on and Pakistan is going down in all socio-eco**mic indicators.“The public and the people massively run towards the army chief, and that is how the army gets involved,” Musharraf said, justifying the frequent military coups in the country. أكثر... |
