A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice (CJ) Anwar Zaheer Jamali and comprising Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed and Justice Umer Ata Bandyal resumed hearing of a suo moto case on Sheesha ban in the country. The CJ expressed his dismay over the delaying tactics of the federal and provincial governments in banning the Sheesha smoking in the country. He said that for the last four months, the authorities were violating the court orders despite the fact that it is an important public matter involving the younger generation of the country. It is pertinent to mention that on **vember 5, 2015 while hearing the case, the CJ had directed all the provincial governments to launch a massive *****down against Sheesha cafes and submit a comprehensive report regarding measures taken to end the evil. “We don’t k**w as to what the Federation wants and why it was **t taking effective measures for banning Sheesha smoking,” he observed. The CJ further said that initially the authorities would take Rs100,000 from Sheesha clubs in Islamabad, whereas **w they are charging Rs500,000 every month. He observed that in Karachi people were smoking Sheesha even today at Boat Basin and DHA. Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed observed that the federal government does **t even k**w if importing Sheesha is benefiting the national exchequer or **t. Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Sohail Mahmood and law ******rs form the four provinces, however, submitted that steps were being taken to ban the import of ******* for Sheesha smoking.The CJ reminded the DAG that the federal government in its statement to the court in June 2016 had sought one month time to take measures for resolving the public interest issue.The CJ said that despite the lapse of four months, still the Federation has **t come up with a sound reply. Until the executive displays the will and the public exerts pressure, the issue of Sheesha smoking can**t be resolved, he added. The DAG informed the court that a proposal had been sent to the Ministry of Commerce on June 1, 2016 for imposing a complete ban on the import of ******* for Sheesha smoking. After they pointed out that the matter required amendment in import policy which was the domain of the Eco**mic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet, a summary was placed before the ECC on July 26, 2016. The ECC directed to place the matter before the federal cabinet. **w a summary has been forwarded to the prime minister for permission to place the matter before the cabinet.
