History maker Cunningham ho**ured with plaque
The plaque put up by the English Heritage -- which ho**urs historical figures -- bears the simple message ´Laurie Cunningham 1956-1989 England international footballer lived here´. Cunningham, who was an accomplished dancer and was offered a role at the prestigious Rambert Ballet which he turned down, became the first black player to play for England in a competitive match when aged 23 he started against Wales in 1979 and marked it by scoring a goal. That year turned out to be the pinnacle of the winger´s career as he also earned a £950,000 move -- then an astro**mical fee for a player -- to Spanish giants Real Madrid from West Brom and became the first Englishman to play for the ´meringues´. The last of his six caps -- he missed out on the Euro 1980 finals despite helping Real to the domestic double -- came in a 1982 World Cup qualifier against Romania. Injuries though limited his effectiveness at Real -- though he played in the 1981 European Cup loss to Liverpool -- who loaned him out to first Manchester United and then Sporting Gijon before selling him to French outfit Marseille. A succession of clubs followed with the one remaining highlight coming from an unsuspected source, winning the 1988 FA Cup as Wimbledon pulled off an upet 1-0 victory over Liverpool.
