Pakistan worked with US against Al-Qaeda: Olson

WASHINGTON: U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP) Richard G. Olson said on Thursday that Pakistan had worked with the US to eliminate Al-Qaeda.

Briefing the US Senate's Foreign Relations Committee, Olson said that Pakistan Army had destroyed the hideouts of militants and terrorists in the country during Operation Zarb-e-Azb. He said Pakistan Army had assured him that all safe havens and hideouts of terrorists would be destroyed.

Richard Olson further stated that the American leadership valued General Raheel Sharif's July 6 statement. He also spoke about relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, stating that ties had improved significantly after President Ghani's election and then subsequently deteriorated over important issues such as border management, refugees and counter-terrorism.

However, he said that the United States supported dialogue between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He claimed that this would lead to more understanding, regional stability and cooperation between the two Asian neighbours.
