The members of the cabinet also reviewed law and order and political situation in the country. The federal cabinet also approved compensation rates for land acquisition for the Diamer Bhasha Dam. With this gigantic project, cheap electricity for longer period of time would be ensured and the country would get over the power crisis. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif directed to ensure transparency in the distribution of compensation money among the affected people. He said construction of mega hydel projects would greatly help in fulfilling the energy needs of the country along with mitigating the hazards of floods. He said the government was determined and focused on resolving the energy issues confronted by Pakistan. “Our plans include execution of short, medium and long-term projects in this regard,” the prime minister said. The premier said transparency must be maintained in the distribution of compensation money among the affected people of Diamer Bhasha Dam. Nawaz told his cabinet colleagues that the government had arranged finances for the Dasu Dam through the World Bank and all required measures had been taken for the construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam. The 272-metre high Bhasha Dam with the capacity to generate 4,500MW electricity per day has been 30 years in the making. In 2008, construction on the dam was meant to be completed by 2016. The dam is capable of storing 8.1 MAF of water and may also support other existing projects and enhance the life of Tarbela Dam by 35 years. The government had attempted to complete acquisition of land for the multibillion dollar project before June this year, but was unsuccessful. Rangers had earlier been deployed in the Diamer district as a security measure to acquire land for the project as local residents were reportedly reluctant to leave the area. A ministerial committee meetinginformed that residents of Thak and other adjoining areas were **t ready to vacate their land despite being paid compensation. The government has paid at least Rs45b as compensation. The prime minister said that the government has taken all steps for the construction of the dam, adding that transparency must be maintained in the distribution of compensation money to the affected people. The cabinet approved designation of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to probe cybercrimes. The cabinet accorded approval to 18-point agenda items. These included approval of the minutes of the last cabinet meeting, land acquisition for Diamer Bhasha Dam: compensation rates of barren land, Chilas and agreement between Indonesia and Pakistan on cooperative activities in the field of defence. The cabinet also approved ratification of the MoU between State Bank of Pakistan and Central Bank of Jordan on general cooperation in expertise and k**wledge exchange in the field of banking and finance. It approved signing of the protocol to amend to the Saarc limited multilateral agreement on avoidance of double taxation and mutual administrative assistance in tax matters, while permission to start negotiations in principle with Belarus for entering into memorandum of understanding on exchange of customs trade data statistics was also accorded. The cabinet confirmed the decisions taken by the Eco**mic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet during 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. It also confirmed the decisions taken by the ECC of the cabinet on Energy, and those taken by the cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCOP) in its meeting held on 10, 13 February, 09, 24 and 26 March and 06 and 11 April, 2015. It also confirmed the decisions taken by the cabinet Committee on Energy (CCE) in its meetings held on 14-10-2015 and 22-02-2016, and those taken by the ECC held on 07-09-2016. Dilating on the question of extension in stay of Afghan refugees, the prime minister said that Afghans are our brothers and very dear to us. He said adequate and concrete steps will be ensured for facilitation of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan. The meeting also approved extension of Afghan refugees stay in the country till 31 March next year. The prime minister directed the Ministry of States and Frontier Regions to hold broad based consultations with the national leadership of mainstream political parties and Afghan representatives for addressing the concerns of Afghan refugees.
