Jim James of the Morning Jacket and Sachal Jazz Ensemble have collaborated on the single 'Love's in Need of Love Today’ which is originally by Motown hero Stevie Wonder.
beyondborders reaching for the stars Sachal Jazz Ensemble takes the stage during the finale of Tokyo Jazz Festival and gets a shout-out from Jim James of the Morning Jacket. Pakistan’s finest orchestra ensemble, Sachal Jazz Ensemble, having been subject of a critically acclaimed documentary – Song of Lahore - by two-time Oscar champion Sharmeen Obaid Chi**y (and Andy Schocken) in 2015, are gently and with thoughtful curiosity, taking the best of Pakistani music to the world. A case in point is their most recent appearance at the Tokyo Jazz Festival, which took place just last week between September 2 and 4. During the two-day event, Pakistan’s Sachal Jazz Ensemble showcased its musical genius on the second day as the finale act and played gorgeous tracks such as ‘Shalimar’ and ‘Take Five’. Outside of the performance, the film, Song of Lahore, was also presented during the festival and found a mostly positive review in The Japan Times, which is the country’s largest English language paper. “Fundamentalist terrorism is affecting everywhere these days, but what is often forgotten is how the Islamic world suffers, too,” wrote Giovanni Fazio. “The documentary Song of Lahore takes us to Pakistan’s cultural hub, a home to the arts since the Mughal empire, yet a city where musicians **w live in fear of Taliban violence.” “Filmmakers Andy Schocken and Sharmeen Obaid-Chi**y focus on the Sachal music studio in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, where a small band of classical musicians — who perform on sitar, tabla, bansuri flute, violin and harmonium — hold on to their tradition in the face of dwindling audiences and intimidation.” The festival, celebrating its 15th anniversary, also saw participation from some of Jazz’s most iconic names such as Herbie Hancock and Pat Metheny as well as artists from all corners of the globe. Moving away from their performance, it must also be mentioned that the documentary, Song of Lahore, came attached with a companion album by Sachal Jazz Ensemble that released in May 2016, on iTunes. According to a piece in Rolling Stone, the album contains plenty of collaborations with prestigious acts like Wilco’s Nils Cline, Sean Len**n, Wynton Marsalis, Bilal, and Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks of the Tedeschi Trucks Band. It also includes “spoken-word contributions from Meryl Streep” reading verses by the late Pakistani poet, Faiz Ahmed Faiz as well as covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Michael Jackson, George Harrison and Nine Simone, among others. The group’s cover of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Love’s in Need of Love Today’ is a joint collaboration with Jim James of The Morning Jacket. “I was ho**red to be asked to sing after being so moved hearing the instrumental Sachal version of one of my favorite songs of all time, ‘Love’s in Need of Love Today’,’’ James said in a statement quoted by Rolling Stone. “I feel like it speaks so beautifully to Stevie’s original message of hope, acceptance and love ... and keeps it going in a fresh direction ... from a completely different background yet still speaking that same message of love that we all need to hear so badly in these confusing times ...
