LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said a comprehensive plan should be evolved for expanding nutrition programme with the collaboration of World Bank.
He was presiding over a meeting which was participated by a delegation of World Bank led by Country Director *****amuthu Illangovan. The meeting reviewed progress of programmes continuing with the cooperation of World Bank in education, health and other sectors in the province. Addressing the meeting, Shahbaz Sharif said World Bank was an important partner of the Punjab government regarding improvement of social sectors and with its cooperation; several programmes were running successfully for providing best facilities to the people of the province. He said the role of World Bank was commendable in improvement of social sectors. He said the Punjab government had taken comprehensive measures for improvement of education, health, potable drinking water and skill development sectors. He said revolutionary reforms were being introduced in education and health sectors. The chief minister said amount of scholarship had been increased to Rs1,000 per month for girl students of Class 6 to 10 in 16 districts of the province and districts of South Punjab had been given priority in this programme. He said nutrition programme was of vital importance to eliminate malnutrition among children and added that cooperation of World Bank was welcomed in this regard. He directed expansion of the scope of nutrition programme and said there was a need to work on multi-dimensions to eliminate malnutrition among the children. He said children are our future and all-out resources are available to safeguard it. He directed P&D chairman that a comprehensive plan should be evolved for expanding nutrition programme and collaboration with regard to World Bank. He said the Punjab government was implementing a coordinated programme of preparing quality skilled manpower. He said under Skill Development Programme, thousands of youths had been made skillful so far and lakhs of youths of the province would be empowered by imparting vocational training by 2018. Assistance by World Bank in skill development sector will be welcomed, he added. He said the Punjab government was spending billions of rupees for poverty alleviation and improvement of social sectors. World Bank Country Director *****amuthu Illangovan said Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was a visionary leader and he had made unprecedented measures for the progress of the province and improving the living standard of the people. He said investment of billions of rupees in the programme of provision of clean drinking water by the Punjab government augers well. Setting up of Punjab Social Protection Authority is an excellent step of the Punjab government, he added. He said the Punjab government was moving forward in right direction regarding education, health, preparation of skilled work force and social sector development.
