** compromise on strategic policy; addresses ceremony held to launch the 17,000-ton Fleet Tanker for Pakistan Navy
KARACHI: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has said that his vision was to strengthen Pakistan on the eco**mic and democratic fronts as there would be ** compromise on stability of the country and on its strategic policy. The prime minister stated this on Friday while addressing as the chief guest a ceremony held here at the Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works to launch the 17,000-ton Fleet Tanker for the Pakistan Navy built here in the country with the collaboration of Turkey. “We want to make Pakistan stronger while also strengthening it in eco**mic and democratic terms as the geographical location of Pakistan provides guarantee for prosperity of the country,” said Nawaz Sharif. The PM said that the China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor project had emerged as an icon for bringing in development and change in the country. “Our vision is a strong democratic Pakistan, which is strengthened in eco**mic terms too,” he said. He said that defence cooperation forged between Pakistan and Turkey had exemplified well the progress the country had achieved towards the stage of self-reliance. He said that the bond of friendship existing between Turkey and Pakistan had overcome all challenges as ties of Pakistan with Turkey covered eco**mic, social and heritage aspects. The prime minister said that cooperation between Turkey and Pakistan in the area of defence would be further strengthened and promoted. Nawaz Sharif said the Fleet Tanker project completed at the Karachi Shipyard would always be remembered as an icon of the bond of friendship existing between Pakistan and Turkey. He said the project would serve as an important milestone in the country’s struggle to achieve self-reliance in the defence sector.The prime minister said the government would continue todepartments for achieving self-reliance. He said that the government had been making progress in its resolve and commitment to make the Gwadar port a centre of regional seaborne trade for getting maximum benefits from the transshipment operations as all the mega-development projects, including the CPEC, was being developed to achieve this vision. He said that the maritime system of the country would be made stronger from Karachi to Gwadar while the construction of CPEC would serve as a game-changer in the region as it would ensure further development in the country from Karachi to Gwadar. He said that Pakistan would utilize well the strength of its youth for the progress and development of the country. The prime minister on the occasion congratulated the Karachi Shipyard, the Pakistan Navy and the Ministry of Defence Production for launching the fleet tanker ship two months ahead of schedule. Nawaz Sharif said that this initiative would certainly open more opportunities for further collaboration between Pakistan and Turkey in the field of indige**us warship construction in particular and other defence sector products in general. Earlier, the MD of KS&EW, Rear Admiral Syed Hasan Nasir Shah, during his welcome address, said that this Fleet Tanker is the biggest warship ever built in Pakistan. He said that the KS&EW has successfully constructed a number of warships for the Pakistan Navy in the past, and it is fully geared-up to undertaking more challenging projects with zeal and energy. The Pakistan Navy has reposed its confidence in the KS&EW by awarding a mega-order for construction of four submarines at the KS&EW in collaboration with China. He also said that the KS&EW is also undertaking installation of a 8,000-ton Ship Lift & Transfer System, which will **t only enhance the KS&EW’s combined capacity of shipbuilding and repairs, but will also significantly increase our revenue generation and creation of more jobs. The contract of the Fleet Tanker had been signed under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence Production, and the ship was constructed at the KS&EW in collaboration with the Turkish shipbuilding firm, M/s Savunma Tek**logiler Muhendisilik (STM). The ship is capable of independently operating at sea for up to three months. The double hull tanker is compliant with the latest International Maritime Organization (IMO) and Marine Pollution (MARPOL) regulations. It will provide logistic support to the Pakistan Navy units at sea through transfer of liquid and dry cargo and is also capable of undertaking combat support operation through embarked helicopters. The ship is also equipped with modern medical facilities to support the Pakistan Navy Fleet units, both during war and disaster-relief operations. Besides the federal ministers, the chief minister of Sindh, the gover**r of Sindh, foreign consul-generals, civilian and military officials also attended the ceremony. The prime minister prayed for the workers and personnel of the Pakistan warship fleet and that of the Karachi Shipyard and also an**unced a Rs1 billion bonus for the employees of the shipyard. MEETING WITH GOVER**R, CM: Later, the prime minister held a meeting with Sindh Gover**r Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah at the Gover**r’s House. The PM reportedly said on the occasion that there would be ** compromise on peace of Karachi while the government had the complete resolve to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the country. He said on the occasion that the next stage of implementation on the National Action Plan against terrorism would be discussed and finalized after a round of consultations with the provinces concerned on August 23. Such a consultation process would make sure due implementation of NAP adopted against the menace of terrorism in the country. The meeting took into account development projects in the province with federal assistance and the law and order affairs of Sindh. The PM was briefed on the progress made so far on the Green Line route of Bus Rapid Transit Service and K-IV Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme being built in Karachi in cooperation with the federal government. The PM was also briefed on the Lyari Expressway and the Karachi-Hyderabad section of the motorway also being constructed by the federal agencies. The PM reportedly said on the occasion that the situation of peace and law and order had improved a lot in Karachi in comparison with the past days of unrest, giving ample opportunities for making investments for business. He said the government would **t allow to go in vain the sacrifices rendered by the civilians and the personnel of the law-enforcement and security agencies for peace and for combating the menace of terrorism as the government had always given due value to these sacrifices. He said the security agencies would pursue terrorists in all parts of the country to eliminate them. He said that the menace of terrorism would be eliminated from every **ok and corner of the country, including that in Karachi. The prime minister said that his government had prioritized elimination of terrorism from the country as its foremost preference. NAVAL WAR GAMES: Pakistan Navy’s biennial war games, Shamsheer-e-Behr-VI, concluded at Karachi on Friday. Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif graced the occasion. The Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, received the chief guest on his arrival. In his welcome address, the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah, apprised the prime minister about the readiness of Pakistan Navy to protect the country’s maritime interests and to meet the conventional and sub-conventional threats in the maritime domain. The Naval chief apprised the chief guest on the importance of the war games in the naval operational planning process and said that it is incumbent upon us to analyze its impact on future naval operations, develop responses and build capacity commensurate with the future needs. Admiral Zakaullah said that in the wake of post-operationalization of CPEC and Gwadar Port, Pakistan’s maritime surroundings will witness profound changes with tremendous increase in shipping activities and development of maritime eco**my. However, cognizant of future security challenges and threats being posed by adversaries, Pakistan Navy is taking all necessary steps to thwart the threats in the maritime domain. The Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (Operations), Vice Admiral Zafar Mehmood Abbasi, also presented analysis of the war game and as a consequence made certain recommendations. Shamsheer-e-Behr is a tri-service event with representation from relevant ministries. The exercise is conducted to try out various concepts which are then validated in subsequent naval field exercise before being incorporated into the naval strategy.
