ISLAMABAD: After expiry of contracts of eleven members at MP-1 scale as well as for Project Director (PD) of China-Pakistan Eco**mic Corridor (CPEC) Maj Gen (R) Zahir Shah, the Ministry of Planning has moved summary to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for extending their tenures till September 15, 2016 in order to provide legal cover for regularizing their discharged responsibilities during last few months and for payment of salaries, perks and privileges.
There are 11 members including Member Infrastructure, Member Implementation & Monitoring (M&I), Member Energy, Member Governance, Member Food and Agriculture, Member Social Sector, Member Private Sector, Member Science & Tech**logy, Member Development Communication, Chief Eco**mist and Vice Chancellor Pakistan Institute of Development Eco**mics (PIDE). The project director of CPEC Gen (R) Zahir Shah’s tenure will also be extended till September 15, 2016 but this post will also be advertised for hiring new project director of CPEC imitative. As stop gap arrangement, the Ministry has finally moved a summary to extend the tenures of members of Planning Commission till mid September 2016 as most of the contracts had expired in last May 2016. “In order to provide legal cover, the Ministry of Planning has **w moved a summary to PM for getting his approval for payment of salaries and other perks and privileges for last few months,” official sources confirmed to The News here on Friday. The government has decided in principle to advertise all the vacant posts of members of Planning Commission to hire new ones at MP-1 scale through open and ‘transparent’ mechanism. The post of three members including Member Private Sector, Member Science & Tech**logy and Member Development Communication fell vacant from last several months and the Planning Commission had already advertised for filling the posts and so far shortlisted the candidates. For filling the remaining posts, the government decided to advertise the members’ posts in order to complete the ****** and for providing legal cover to the work done by the members after expiry of their tenures in last May 2016. **w the question arises that why the government showed laid-back attitude after expiry of their tenure as first it was thought to grant them extension for two years period but later on this idea was dropped and the government decide The Planning Commission works under a Policy Board being chaired by Prime Minister that includes the Deputy Chairman, 10 Federal Ministers and members of the Planning Commission. The Chief Eco**mist in the Planning Commission was considered as the most important post in the eco**mic ministries before its latest restructuring. But this ****** was made ineffective during the last restructuring of the Planning Commission done by the government after coming into power, an insider commented. When contacted to Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal for seeking his comments on Friday, he said the summary was moved to PM Nawaz Sharif for extending the tenure of members till September 15, 2016 in order to complete the ****** and then hire new ones afterwards. “It will be stop gap arrangement as the government decided to advertise these vacant posts,” he added.
