Three killed as army convoy ambushed in held Kashmir
SRINAGAR: Militants ambushed an Indian military convoy in held Kashmir on Wednesday, killing Three personnel, in an escalation of violence that officials have blamed on separatist protests that have tied down security forces for more than a month.
The region is in the midst of the worst unrest in six years that began early last month when security forces killed a young separatist commander who was idolised by some youth, provoking an outpouring of anger. Police Superintendent Imtiaz Hussain said militants were taking advantage of the unrest to attack security forcesafter years of declining violence. Militants ambushed an army convoy early on Wednesday in the town of Baramulla, killing two soldiers, and then struck at a police jeep when it arrived, killing one policeman, he said. "We were aware about the presence of the militants around Baramulla town for over a month but due to violence across Kashmir, they managed to consolidate and carry out an attack," Hussain said. Security forces launched a major search for the militants who fled the scene, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. In a worrying escalation the previous day, Indian security forces fired live rounds at a crowd of stone-throwing protesters in Baramulla district, killing five and wounding 10. Earlier, police and troops trying to control crowds had resorted to the use of shotguns, whose pellets are meant to incapacitate but **t kill. But residents of held Kashmir say the shotguns have inflicted severe injuries and even blinded hundreds of people including bystanders. At least 64 protesters have been killed and thousands injured during 40 days of unrest, while schools, shops and ******s remain closed in much of Kashmir as paramilitary troops patrol. On Wednesday, Indian authorities re-imposed a curfew in Srinagar to stop a separatist alliance of political and religious groups from holding a sit-in outside the ****** of the UN Military Observer Group to press for its involvement. "The UN can**t watch the massacre in Kashmir as a mute spectator," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the chairman of a faction of the All Parties Hurriyet Conference. The UN group routinely declines to comment to media, referring queries to UN headquarters. On the other hand, a top UN human rights official expressed "deep regret" at the failure of Indian and Pakistan authorities to grant his team access to the separate parts of Kashmir to probe recent allegations of human rights violations. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra´ad Al Hussein described as unfortunate a failure to independently assess the serious allegations which include use of excessive force and state sponsorship of violence.
