One-month-long Lok Virsa summer camp ends
Islamabad: Children enjoyed learning about the language (alphabets), culture, arts, crafts, music, festivals and sports of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh in a summer camp of Pashto and Sindhi languages organised by Lok Virsa. The one-month long camp ended on Wednesday.
Aimed at appreciating the diversity of Pakistan, the summer Camp, which started in July 2016, successfully concluded in a colorful ceremony held in Lok Virsa. Member, National Assembly and Chairperson Women Parliamentary Caucus Shaista Pervez, Member was the chief guest on the occasion. The objective of the camp was to provide an orientation to children (age 6-12 years) about the language, poetry, crafts, music and festivals of both these communities. It aimed at creating ownership among children regarding Pakistan’s languages and cultural heritage. It also reaffirmed our identity of being multi-cultural and pluralistic country. Twenty five children took part in the summer camp which shows that the parents welcomed the initiatives and they want to teach their children about these important regional languages instead of availing usual summer camps with the purpose to provide them a flavor of Pashto and Sindhi cultures and above all, a great opportunity to learn about Pakistan’s rich, diverse and pluralistic cultural tapestry. The event featured a number of colorful folk musical performances and cultural diversity shows presented by the students of Islamabad Model School for Girls (IMSG), G-6/1-3. The famous folk and mystic songs sung by children included “Lai be kadran nal yari teh tut gai tarak ker ke” “Mor thor tille rana, jaanan,” “Pat lal meri” and several others. A special cultural diversity show “Rhythm of Unity” was also presented by students of IMSG, G-6/1-3. A patriotic song “Chalo ye sochian hum aaj mil ke” was also sung by children in connection with the Independence Day celebrations of Pakistan. Shaista Pervez commended the efforts of Lok Virsa for infusing new spirit in the younger generation about unity in diversity and cultural heritage of Pakistan. In her welcoming remarks, Lok Virsa Executive Director Dr. Fouzia Saeed informed that it was a 20-day activity where the children were taught about the language (alphabets), culture, arts, crafts, music, festivals, sports, etc. in different periods and in an interactive and enjoyable manner. “The program included 15-day classes, a two-day interactive workshop and three-day educational visits to the reputed museums, i.e. Heritage Museum, Pakistan Monument Museum and Pakistan Museum of Natural History,” she added. Lok Virsa Executive Director further apprised that apart from informal learning of languages, the children were also encouraged to participate in practical activities like folk singing, music, craft making, painting, etc. Folk artists, artisans, story tellers and craft experts also interacted and shared their experiences with them during the summer camp. The summer camp children was also provided an opportunity to take part in the “Youth Painting Contest” with the theme “Independence Day of Pakistan” at the Pakistan Monument Museum on August 14. Pakistan, a multi-lingual country, is enriched with more than 24 languages and dialects. These languages portray excellence of literature, poetry, folk songs, and spiritual quotes of Sufi saints and enhances the richness of our cultural heritage.
