How generous a person is could be down to **thing more than the way their brain is wired, new research suggests. Scientists have for the first time identified the specific region of the brain responsible for altruistic thoughts – and it appears to work naturally better in some people than in others. The subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (SACC) has been pinpointed as the area of grey matter that activates when we think of helping our fellow man or woman. “Although people have a remarkable inclination to engage in prosocial behaviours, there are substantial differences between individuals”, says Dr Patricia Lockwood, Oxford University Thirty one volunteers were placed in an MRI scanning machine and asked to select symbols which were more likely to give them, or someone else, a reward. The researchers from Oxford University and University College London found the SACC was the only part of the brain to light up when the subject thought about helping others. أكثر... |
