Mathew Barret **t a spy, deportation*within two to three days: Nisar

Tells NA significant progress made in Quetta suicide attack investigation;
NAP implementation is shared responsibility

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan informed the National Assembly on Tuesday that the blacklisted US national Mathew Barret was **t a spy and the government would deport him in the next two to three days.

Responding to points of order raised by different members, he said the Ministry of Interior had taken a serious **tice of issuance of visa to Mathew Barret and an FIA official who had cleared him may be dismissed from service.

The minister said issuance of a visa to the US national deported on the orders of the Supreme Court pertained to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “The US national was issued a visa in 24 hours and **t in 48 hours whereas common people have to visit visa ******s there many times,” the minister said.

He recalled that Mathew Barret was taken into custody in 2011 when he was roaming about in the Fatehjang area but at that time ** maps or other documents were recovered from him.He said according to the Joint Investigation Team report, the charges of espionage were **t proved against him.

Earlier, raising the issue on a point of order, a PTI parliamentarian Dr. Shireen Mazari questioned as to how Mathew Barret, who was arrested from a prohibited area during the year 2011, was issued a visa by the Pakistani consulate. She said maps and other documents were also recovered from him.

Nisar said significant progress in investigation into the Quetta suicide attack had been made due to intelligence inputs.“We have made a significant progress in investigation while some people have also been arrested,” he said.

He said the perpetrators of the Quetta tragedy would be nabbed at all costs adding that the tragic incident was a challenge for them.He said the DNA tests and biometrics were also **t helpful as the fingerprints found from the site were of a resident of Pishin district who was a victim of suicide bombing.

He said a high-level meeting with all the chief ministers would be held in the next few days on the implementation of NAP.Nisar said the National Action Plan (NAP) Committee was administrative in nature and will report to the top leadership headed by the prime minister.

He pointed out that out of 20 points of NAP, nine belonged to the provinces and eight to different federal ministries and therefore NAP’s implementation was a shared responsibility.On a**ther point of order, a PTI member Dr. Arif Alvi sought information with regard to progress on investigations into the Quetta tragedy.

Two bills — the General Statistics (Reorganization) (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the Medical Consultancy and Other Services (Rationalization of Fees) Bill, 2016 — were introduced in the House. The chair referred to the bills to the standing committees concerned.

Chairman of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Cabinet laid before the house a report on Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill, 2014.PML-N member Marvi Memon introduced the bill in the National Assembly on March 25, 2014.

According to the report, the standing committee rejected the bill after observing that the amendments in it would limit the scope of the existing law. Therefore, the committee decided **t to recommend the bill for passage.Earlier, at the outset, the house proceedings were suspended for 30 minutes for lack of quorum. PTI member Ms. Musarrat Ahmadzeb pointed out a lack of quorum in the house.
