Nawaz for expediting water, power projects
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has asked the Water and power Development Authority (Wapda) for acceleration in pace of development work on the ongoing power generation projects and to further explore the huge hydropower generation potential for maximum utilisation to benefit the people of the country. While talking to Zafar Mahmood, Chairman Wapda, at the Prime Minister’s House on Tuesday, the prime minster said that production of electricity was essential for the future of the country but the transmission system had also to be revamped to cater to the future needs. He reminded that the government was keen to see enhancment in electricity production within the shortest possible time for the sake of the country and its people. The Wapda chairman, who is a senior and proficient bureaucrat, called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to brief him about the development activities of the authority. The chairman apprised the premier on progress in various ongoing hydropower projects in the country. The prime minister said that Wapda needed to work efficiently for the development of water and hydropower resources in Pakistan. “We are aiming to produce cheap and affordable electricity and also address the water shortages issue; especially to ensure all necessary measures for averting the acute water challenges in coming times,” said the prime minister. “Generation of affordable and clean electricity will **t only provide relief to consumers but building of water storages will also enable the country to fulfill its water requirements. Wapda needs to expedite building of water reservoirs across the country, which would certainly mitigate the flood hazards as well,” directed the prime minister. In a**ther meeting with the outgoing President Azad Kashmir Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, the prime minister reiterated his government’s firm resolve to extend its fullest moral, diplomatic and political support to the indige**us freedom struggle of Kashmiri people.
