Purists will perhaps disagree with the repertoire of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan as he racks up hits across Bollywood and right here at home but what ** one can deny is his e**rmous star-power and its constant growth, irrespective of shoddily-titled records like Back 2 Love. Having picked up a Lux Style Award for Best Male Singer (Film) for his contribution to the ‘Bin Roye’ soundtrack just last month, RFAK is on a roll as accolades chase him everywhere he goes.
The years of performance and the ability to keep the tradition of qawwali alive, even in a fusion-esque manner, have put RFAK on a map in a way that reminds one of his late uncle - the legendary NFAK. Ho**ured with a lifetime achievement award by Oxford University earlier this year, the acclaimed singer is currently prepping for a three city tour of the United Kingdom during which he will hit London, Manchester and Coventry. His playlist will include contemporary Bollywood hits as well as qawwali, a devotional form of music that goes back 700 years.
Though RFAK’s recent releases such as the single ‘Zaroori Tha’ and Sultan’s ‘Jag Ghoomeya’ have amassed more than 100 million views on YouTube, it’s his stint on the upcoming season of Coke Studio 9 that has us excited especially since one of those songs will be a joint performance with the late Amjad Sabri.
